The trick is to lift the FRONT edge of the visible plate so that the plate can slide REARWARDS and disengage. Then you can tighten the four screws which hold the shoe in place. I lift the front edge with a toothpick in the round hole, but sometimes this cannot apply enough force to overcome the weak glue and I use a fine metal screwdriver to prize it up. Done it to one of my two Mk2 s, an old Mk1 and numerous off camera cords. I've never bothered reapplying any glue on reassembly.

It is not the brackets. There are 4 very fine philips screws under the hot shoe cover plate. Take a very thin knife or blade and position it at the front of the hot shoe (Toward Lens Mount, just in front of the "hole") and slip it vertically down. Then pry slighty toward the rear of the camera (eye piece) while lifting up. The plate will pop up and slide off revealing the 4 screws. Tighten the screws with a Jewelers srewdriver, slip the plate back on and you are good to go. I have done this on both the hot shoe and off camera cord on my 10D.
