I'm going to the SF Giants vs. Oakland A's game tomorrow. I'm not planning on taking pictures of the players because my lenses are too short, but I would like to capture the environment. Fans, stadium, food, etc. I'm probably crazy, but I only want to take one lens so I have less to worry about.

My choices are the 24-105 and the 50 f/1.4. The game starts at 7:15 pm, so there will be about an hour of usable daylight. I'm thinking the 24-105 would be the better lens to take, because even when it gets dark I should be to take steady shots at 1/15 sec. Also no tripod, no flash.

What would you bring? Maybe you can also convince me to bring both lenses :p

That is far to slow to stop action depending on what type of shots you want. The players will have to be still for you to shoot at 1/15 even with IS. If you wanted to get a shot of a player sliding into home plate then i would suggest you to raise the iso so that you can shoot faster shutter speeds. and yea the 24-105 would be the best for you to bring. Depending on where you are located on the field 50 will be far to short. Hope this helps.

Not planning on getting action shots of the game, rather the surrounding environment: Fans, food, stadium, etc. I think the 24-105 would be nice for shooting the fans from a safe distance, but the 50 could give some nice DOF.

So take them both...

I'll be there tomorrow and Sunday; probably will only take camera gear for Sunday's game.
