I'm seriously considering this lens. After picking up a Tamron 17-50mm, I found this focal length to be great for what I shot. I'm just not sold on the IQ of the Tamron, though.

Neither was I, then I switched to this lens, no regrets.

hmmm...looks like i'll be making the switch. I usually order from Adorama, is there a better place to order this lens for cheaper?

I bought mine from Canoga (external link) out in your neighborhood. But they seem to be out at the moment. It might be worth a call to see if they have it. You'd probably get it in a day or two with regular UPS shipping. But you'd probably have to pay tax, too.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

47stphoto on eBay. I put in an offer for $629 w/ free shipping and they accepted. You could possibly try a lower offer and have it accepted, I should have tried $600!

Hi - first time finally posting on the PotN forums but a reader for several months. I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and for sharing their photos with this wonderful lens. After long deliberation between the Siggy 17-50 and the Canon 17-55, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the Sigma. It's an amazing lens and super-sharp out of the box. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Anyhow, just wanted to post a quick thanks - you definitely made the decision much easier for me, whether you knew it or not. ;) Now...if only the weekend would come sooner so I can start taking some pics!

Cheers,
-Tony

Go on eBay and search for it, find 47stphoto, and they have a best offer setup there. I offered 629 free shipping and they accepted. You should try lower. :)

I just wanna thank you as I just did this. I offered $600 and it was declined a few hours later. I put in $629 and it was immediately accepted about 20 seconds later. I should have tried $615. Haha

The other cheapest price I could find was $654 at Abes of Maine using their luxury15 promotion code.

And on the plus side I ordered the lens last night and it's already on its way. But no tracking number..so now I don't know when it will be here??? Ohhh the anticipation!

Just got my 17-50 today, I am really looking forward to giving it a whirl tomorrow. Did some focus charts and it is spot on. Once question about it though, does everyone else's copy have the old sparkly EX finish? I thought it would have been the new matte finish like the Sigma 30 I also just bought.

Had my 17-50 for a few months. Mine has the sparkly finish. I actually called Sigma about this because I thought I had an old lens or something since I was seeing new Sigma's with the smooth finish. According to what I was told they are not offering the 17-50 in the smooth finish. At that time, anyway. May release it later but the rep never said.

I am considering this lens as a replacement for my Tamron 17-50 non-VC. It's a very sharp lens but I do a lot of indoor shots and having a lens with similar IQ and with OS would be great.

Anyway, I was almost ready to pull the trigger when I read reviews on Adorama and out of 8 reviewers 2 complained about autofocus problems - hunting in low light, lots of lost shots due to AF inconsistency, etc. Someone also mentioned that manual focusing with this lens is nearly impossible because of short focus ring travel.

How bad of a problem is it ? I initially chose Tamron over Sigma because of complaints regarding Sigma's quality control and AF misfires.

Finally, am I correct in thinking that Sigma HSM, unlike Canon USM, doesn't allow full-time MF ?

Thanks !
