I'm not overly impressed with the 2.8 performance on my copy. f/4 is significantly sharper.

You essentially have to accept the fact that most any zoom and most primes will be sharper stopped down unless your ready to invest in some of the Leica R APO MF lenses that start around 3K and up.

Just be happy with a relatively well built lens with OS that only costs around 600 bucks and if not send it back.

I have 4 old vintage primes ranges from f1.7 to f3.4 and all of them are sharper in the center and corners then this Sigma wide open but i bought it primarily to have the ability to shoot the grandkids with a fast AF lens in this FL range since i had sold -off my 17-55/f2.8 awhile back when the IS failed.

Regards, ;)

Well, if you decide to swap it out with 47stPhoto let me know how they treat you. I do know if you request your money back you pay for the return shipping and also pay a 15% restocking fee.

I would have ordered direct from Amazon and spent the extra 54 bucks versus the $615 we paid but unfortunately purchasing from Amazon direct was not available at the time.

Plus Amazon is still not selling this lens direct:

After more testing...I think I'm gonna keep this lens...I think I had to compare it to my 18-135mm to really convince me.

18-135mm @ 18mm f/3.5 (full shot (external link))
17-50mm @ 17mm f/3.5 (full shot (external link))
- all crops 100%, no post editing (just jpg conversion in LR3)

+1 ^^^

The captures look fine to me and the 100% crop comparison was the most convincing evidence your copy is O.K.

Glad you dont have to go thru the hassel of a swap or a return.

Should get mine tomorrow but unfortunately dont reside where there is outstanding scenery like you have. Maybe i will get a shot of a Coyote or just a Cactus flat !

Regards, ;)
