Quick question: Is the focus ring supposed to be fluid throughout? From Inf down to 2ft it's fluid, then it's rubbing against something on my copy. Autofocus is fine.

Yes it should be fluid through the whole range.

Just got this lens yesterday. Quick battery tests showed perfect focus. picture came out REALLY SHARP. My only complaint is the lens hood. It feels like it can get loose at any second. Not tight at all.

Sigh, thanks. It's not like I even use manual that much, but just the thought that there's one thing wrong on an otherwise wonderful lens... Yes it's definitely rubbing against something.

I'd just swap it out, you are the first person I have heard of to have this issue. You are unlikely to have issues with a replacement copy.

The one i just got last week is fine and the hood even snapped on pretty tight with a final slight click & dont feel too loose to me. Unless it starts after you take it off & back on numerous times.

So far i am a pretty satisfied owner.

Regards, ;)

I've heard people complaining about the fit of the hood. Mine is like yours, it has a very positive lock. Sometimes I wonder if some owners aren't turning the hood far enough to reach it's true lock position?

Yeah, it's not a matter of rotating it far enough, it's just poorly designed. Mine has come off twice just while walking. It's only matter of time before I lose it. I much prefer the old design.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

My lens will be here today (missed the FedEx truck yesterday). However, I am worried about getting a "bad" copy. What are some of the tests I should do to verify. Please bear with me as I am still very new with this sort of thing. If it matters, Im shooting with a 7D.
Thanks,
Sprout

Print yourself out an autofocus test chart to verify that it doesn't severely front or back focus. If it's only marginally off, you can either cope with it, or since you are using a 7D, use the micro adjustment feature to help get it perfect.

There's probably a write-up on here somewhere of how to setup your test shot with the autofocus chart.

Here ya go, here's a good site to get you started: http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart (external link)

Besides that issue, obviously make sure everything works. OS, autofocus, etc. Not much else to check after that!

I honestly wouldn't be to concerned about getting a bad copy, from what I have seen on this forum is that bad copies of this lens are pretty rare.

If you dont want to go the chart route just do a simplistic test as i did in the link below and enjoy your lens if it passes this:

Im thinking of picking up a copy and have a question. If you were an idiot and held the focus ring and then tried to autofocus, what would I break?

If I was an idiot, you would not break anything :).
Sorry I can't help it but I know what you meant.
I want to know as well.
