Some companys do an advance replacement scheme, but these are usually under the RMA warranties, I would guess Sigma would not do that, but you could ask.

any idea on how long it takes ? i have a wedding i have to shoot in 4 weeks

Here's a wild suggestion....maybe ask Sigma?? C'mon.

And to sell it with its current defect will be a bad decision because you will take a significant loss on it. Get it fixed. Would you really shoot a wedding with a defective lens?

Hmm... I don't know. Every time I've sent in something electronic to be fixed, the time estimate was never anywhere near correct. Anyone here ever had to send in a lens to sigma before?

Also for fellow owners of this lens:

I just recieved mine from amazon. It's quite as everyone said. I'm very pleased. Thanks again for all the posts. Quick question though. Are there like three releases of this lens? I'se seen pictures of this lens with and without tho gold ring, but all seem to have that EX powdered almost fuzzy finish that was on my old 24-70 EX lens.

When I received mine I was surprised to find that odd EX finish missing. I'm not at all displeased by this. I'm not quite certain whether i like the EX finish or not. Just curious. Has anyone else purchased one without the powdered finish?

Mine is one of the franken-finish ones. The switch section is like yours, smooth. Then the part with the mm markings and "17-50mm 1:2.8". Then the focus ring area is smooth and the very front is fuzzy again. Doesnt bother me as its an amazing glass and thats what really matters.

well, the second copy of the 17-50 from B&H i received yesterday wouldn't even AF.
once i held down the shutter button halfway, the lens would buzz and vibrate but the focus ring wouldn't even turn.

really disappointed. returning for a refund.
i'll may try again down the road or just bite the bullet and get the Canon 17-55. MLEH!

LoL Indeed, it is a clunky thing isnt it?

Really though, mine does make some odd clunks and such every so often. I always thought I was just going nuts?
