I was just wondering if anyone has any good advice on digital outdoor signs. The spot I want to put it by the highway doesn't have any power, so I would need a battery/solar power thing to put at the base of the sign.

I intend to look at lowes and home depot as well as sams club when I get a chance, but things are so busy right now that might be a week away.

It doesn't have to display pictures, just preferably a few lines of text that can scroll. Im not sure how you would put the messages on it, perhaps save it on a sd card or have a terminal on the back to enter the message.

These cost (for a smallish, single color text only sign) in the neighborhood of $5,000. A local sign company is usually the most cost effective and convenient. They're pretty easy to program, and depending on the sign, you can do it by wi-fi, or direct connection to a PC.

hmm, $5000 is a bit more than what I was expecting. I wonder if a local shop will rent one. :D

You can get indoor signs easily for under $1,000, (heck, a small programmable low resolution single line window sign can be had for under $300) but if you're wanting an outdoor sign, even a 6 foot by 12 foot monochrome can run you $10,000 (which I would think the ABSOLUTE minimum if it's meant to be seen by people on the highway). We have a place locally that rents virtually everything, and in some cases will buy it if they don't already have it (they actually rent swamp coolers, which are basically outdoor air conditioners, and boom lifts, and costumes, and everything in between). If you have any large scale rental places around it might be worth checking into.

You might want to check your local rules and regs on outdoor sign placement too. Once you get near highways and such things like crashworthyness, right of way, and sign clutter need to be considered. Your local public works office may be of help with this.
