I don't think it's contrast you're seeing. It's the exposure difference. We shot this in AV mode. At the exact same setting, it looks like the Canon lets in a tad hair more light. Probably about 1/3 more. Shooting the same shot again with -1/3 exposure compensation would more than likely yield the same result.

My friend was excited about his new sigma lens as was I. We did some impromptu test to make sure his copy was good and meets his expecation. Nothing scientific about these test. Just sharing some results. Conclusion...Sigma has a winner with this lens.

Thanks Kenny for pointing things out. Kenny is exactly right about the setting and shot. It was taken a split second from one another. This was the only shot we took that was actually closest in terms of position to one another and composition. I just re-sized them to so I could upload the file. The left is Sigma and the right is Canon.

For the money, I think I am very happy with this investment. And thank you Kenny for coming over with your 85mm L for the little test. And thank you for the photos of Ayden.

I think the varied EV is from the lens actual T-stop being narrower on the Sigma...

Yes, early on I did a manual exposure comparison with the two lenses - I saw a ~1/3 to ~1/2 stop exposure difference between the 85L and the sigma.

Its good to see people enjoy the sigma now instead of complaining about the little things :)

If anybody is looking for this lens I have one for sale in the for sale section. I just had it calibrated at sigma, but decided to pickup the 70-200 II and use it as my portrait/sports lens.

So this is something that is a little concerning to me as someone who might be interested in trading an 85L for a Sigma 85 if it's reviews continue to be so positive. My concern is that it looks like about 1/3, or possibly 1/2, stop difference. Does this mean that the Sigma at f1.4 would be equal to the Canon at f1.6? I'd love two back-to-back pictures with identical settings but with the Canon at 1.6 and Sigma at 1.4 to see if the exposure is equal.

I remember that when the Sigma 30mm came out, some people felt like it was a little brighter at f1.4 than other lenses at f1.4. So, there was a rumor it might actually be closer f1.3. I was hoping the 85 was the same, but I really hope it isn't closer to f1.6 compared to the 85L.

It's really hard to say. Truc and I only did a few comparison shots. The shots we did take looks like a 1/3 of a stop difference. I think thatkatmat is absolutely right about the EV difference is Tstop related rather than Fstop.

Next time we meet up, I'll try out the 1.4 Sigma shot vs the 1.6 Canon shot with the same ISO and shutter speed to see if the shots are closer exposure wise.

As much fun as the 35L and 135L are, I'm really wanting to pick this up soon. I have my lights and new computer I'm ordering this month and then I should have enough for this in Late February. I keep on going back and forth between this and the 85L but I think I'm going to save the other grand for a new TV or maybe a down payment on a bike ;)

Quick review - shot the above with 7D. Lighting conditions in this gym call for f/2, 1/640 at ISO 2500. The shots look pretty clean to me. Color and contrast look good. Probably could use a tad NR, but they're good enough for the kids I shoot for.

Only nit with with the Sigma 85 compared to the Canon 85mm f/1.8 is the focus is noticeably slower than the Canon. I'll have to process some more from tonight's game and get a look at the backgrounds for more comparison to the Canon.

Overall ... it worked and I took home a lot of good shots. Lastly, after this basketball season, the lens will be focusing on people and not basketball anymore. I bought the lens for portrait work but gave it a try at a game to see how it would perform. It certainly passed the test.

Here is a picture of the sigma 85mm 1.4 compared to the Canon 85mm f1.2L II. Both at 1.4 using my friend's 85mm L.

Top one is sigma, bottom one is canon

how do i know? simple: Sigma has a more noisier feel compared to the canon. If you look at the bokeh in the background, it is a pretty big giveaway based on the image characteristics of the two lenses.

there is also more contrast in the top one, but that is much harder to distinguish then the distracting bokeh. (at least in my book)

Certainly the bokeh stands out more sharply in the top one, but how much of that is because of the exposure? Personally, I think we could compare better if the exposure slider on one of them was pushed over 1/3 stop or so. IMO much of the detail/contrast difference will disappear when the actual brightness level is equalized.

Simple, yeah, as it was revealed already....

Noisier feel? Noise has ZERO to do with the lens...

Too bad you didn't chime in earlier, most everyone else guessed the opposite.
In actuality, unless you're pixel peeping the original size, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference...

Pretty cool that a $900 lens can match or beat a $1900 lens.

I just hope the comparison shots are also posted on the 85L thread. Why should the sigma be compared to the L when the L can be compared to the sigma :D
