Not really... it was fixable with ma... the way I see it as the motor works in then it has some play...if within the limits of the ma then no problems ...if outside of that then simple calibration...it is really something to expect when you have so many parts and then so many lens that must match the various models of canon available from 10ds to 60Ds, 7Ds and 5Ds

not a fan boy but realist about a mass manufacture world

What did actually worry me is that the focus shifted during the evening. Did I understand correctly that you started with MA at 0 and finished at -14? That's a lot for just a few hours...

I don't want to make a big thing out of it, it may only be a few lenses having this issue, but I am really considering this lens...

dang - I hope that's not a normal occurrence because I will not be micro adjusting all the time on the fly like that, that's crazy.

mmhhh i had the same problem with the 135L on a 5DII, i was in the middle of a shooting in the metro of milan and it started frontfocusing, i was 6m far from the model, I focussed on the eyes and the ears were in focus, i MA and all was fine, then we went out and i turn off the MA and all was fine again, i think is because of the size of the focus points on the 5DII and with little light (neon ambient light) they cannot distinguish small (from long distances) detail like eyes..

I am not putting much worry into it and feel that it should not be a deterrent to get the lens. If I had rented the lens and then it did this....I would STILL BUY it.
The images from it are great. I have other pics with the lens where I can see the individual eyelashes at focus point at 100%. The bokeh is fine for me and I like it very much.

...Sebr If you ask me if I would recommend it...yes I would. but that is me. You have to decide your level of tolerance when things are off.

I pushed the lens in terms of focus transitions from close 1.3 m to 10 m frequently as I trail the players. I also switched from shutter button focusing to AE button focusing which meant my lens drive was constantly working.

Someone else mentioned it happen to their L lens... so as all electronics and mass produced you will get a bell curve and lucky to get no problems. I try not to let a handful dictate. Sigma is good at fixing their stuff as they constantly have to deal with "badgers" who nay say all based on few incidents.

i have another sigma lens that I sent back yet I went ahead and got another one and it is fine. Remember that all the lenses regardless of manufacturer must go through travel from factory to store to your hands. Not all in the transport chain can know if a box dropped and it contained lenses...so some trauma could occur. Unfortunately for the manufacturer from Canon to Sigma or Tokina they cannot know either...that is why you have replace or fix policy and warranty.

Hope that alleviates your fears.

Thanks, it's an unusual look at Seattle...You don't typically get a good angle of the city with Mt Baker in the background...Usually you see Mt Ranier....

FWIW...I shot my son playing soccer yesterday in Servo on my 7D at f1.4-f2 for sh!ts and giggles....Got very few OOF shots and was really surprised at how well the 85 kept up.....Like the post above, I was shooting from about 2 to 10 meters...The difference being mine didn't show any front or backfocus at any subject distance....Pretty cool shooting field sports at 1.4....It sure isolates the subject..I would highly recommend this lens for outdoor sports (Haven't shot indoor sports with it yet:) )

arcticfoxchar...This wasn't a dig at you at all, just another view from a different owner who's been putting this lens through the paces....To be honest...I never expected it to be...THIS good!

i bought it for indoor sports and cannot be happier.

i was worried that i would not be able to keep up. In the arena I was in I was able to stop down as well so the ability to do that and still know I could open it wide to f1.4 surely gave me confidence that with camera I have I should catch action in most indoor hall.

I was shooting with 50mm so I had to get use to the new FOV...but I can adapt to it.

Thatkatmat ---> no offense taken... I did not think there was any dig at all but another enthusiast stating his/her (PC correctness) real world experience!

someone else was a little worried 'bout the lens...just wanted to say I am still believe in the lens and its quality...it ticks all the boxes in my list.
