Canon EF 50 1.2L USM vs. Sigma 50 1.4 HSM: Fight!

So looking at focal length graphs I created, showing me what FLs I shot the past three years, I can see that for 2 of those 3 years, I shot more at 50mm than at any other single FL, followed by circa. 85 and then circa. 35.

From what I can tell, the "nifty-fifty" aside, the "SIGMALUX" offers a pretty good bang for the buck.

What do you all think about it in relation to the 50 1.2L or even the Canon 50 1.4?

id say go for the sigma if you got a body that can microadjust. not saying urs will have focus issues, but its a safer bet

There is a fantastic comparision done on here somewhere, I have it bookmarked on my desktop, unfortunatlly I'm on my laptop so I cannot share. But I'm sure a few searches would help.

To summarize, the Sigma, given 1/3 of the cost is comparable to the 50L.

Hasn't this been beaten to death here in the forums?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

In terms of quality, it seems to be:

Nifty Fifty -> Canon 50mm f/1.4 -> Sigmalux -> Canon 50mm f/1.2L.

I promise I did do a search. I didn't think I quite saw the definitive "battle" thread.

Why? I heard micro-adjust can be done at any repair shop, don't really know how they do it, but they promised me it can be done on my t2i.

Cheers

Sigma is better in the center, but 50L wins mid-frame and in corners.
Strictly in terms of IQ, is that worth 3x the price (to you)?

This is what it comes down to. If you want to shoot in the rain, in sandy/dusty conditions, The 50L has a great build and is weather sealed.

But you have a T2i.... its NOT weather sealed, Get the Sigma.

Sorry but looking at that, the Sigma looks better to me mid frame and corners.

I think for the math geek in all of us gear heads that would be better written thusly:

Nifty50 < Canon 50/1.4 < Sigmalux < Canon 50/1.2L < Canon 50/1.0L

well even better! :p

Using my Sigmalux is a real treat.
I keep it at 1.4 most of the time. If I'm going to pay for a lens that says f/1.4, I better be able to use it @ f/1.4 with some pretty darn good results!

i've had them all.

sigma is super super nice when focus was bang on...... but that AF was unreliable. i microadjusted to death using lensalign tool and just eyeballing tool. a subject at min focus distance it would be gorgeous. then at near infinity, it was complete crap shoot. with 50L , there was no such "crap shoot". it was 90% bang on in whatever distance..... the f/1.2 was a different challenge. DOF is so thin that one can blame gear instead of user error (similar to 85L)

frankly if youre on the fence, just buy them all on your credit card... pick the one u want, then return the one you dont like. any reputable store has 15day return policy.
