Question what is your opinion on buying a used good condition 1Ds mkII less than $2000 cnd or a new 7D $1575 tax in.

Someone wants to buy my 50D.

I shoot mainly portrait and occasional landscape when I travel. Im not a sport shooter.

Which camera has a better picture quality. I shoot raw and using DPP or CS5 to process the photos. I find the 5D II is miles ahead of the 50D in picture quality and noise.

Will be keeping my 5D II.

Thanks

1Ds mkII in my opinion ... although the 5D2 that you already have will top both of them for landsapce and portraits

The answer is more glass, imo. The 5D MKII will handle the rest.

It seems that those which have both the 7D and 5DII are very, very happy due to the complementary nature of these two cameras. If you think a 50D on steroids would be great, the 7D is the choice, if you want a FF backup to your 5DII, then the 1Ds is the candidate.

Depends on wether you want your second body to also be a FF or crop really. I sold my 50D and wanted a 5DII but the price of the 1DsII was just too tempting. I don't regret the purchase and love the 1d bodies now. There are advantages to having 2 FF bodies as there are advantages to having a crop and a FF. HEll, split it down the middle and get a 1dIV, should do it all fabulously.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I just trying to figure what camera will give the better picture quality the older FF 1Ds II or the current 7D. The reason is that on 100% crop the 50D or from what I have seen on the web the 7D does not look as sharp as the 5D II.

Is the older 1Ds mkII focus better than the 5D II. Would not mind a little more accurate and faster focus.

Will eventually get a T2i for the kids they are taking photography this Sept in school.

Wish I could afford a 1D mkIV too mush $$ for the hobbyist shooter.

Lens I went to the local dealer where I buy my camera's from as he called to say he has stock. I told him I was looking to get the 70-200mm F2.8 Is II. After playing with it at the store with the 5D II I could feel the weight in my left arm. :(

Last year I took some casual photos of my wife niece wedding and used the 70-200mm F4 IS lens for 5 hours with no problems.

I would say new 7D will always be better than used 1DII. Now, if we're talking about 1DIII, then it's a different story ;)
You get 8fps, great high iso capabilities, and hidef video recording. Also, having a used camera vs new has to be considered as well. 7D is also rated up to 150k shutters, making it a definite keeper.

If you're into landscape and portrait, why would a 7D crop body be of interest to you?

I just did this (1Ds vs 7D/5D combo), I went with the 1DsII and I love the camera.

Portrait and Landscape are best served with full frame, but I do sports with the 1Ds (motorsport) with no problem at all.

Be aware of the "shortcomings" of the older 1 series. The lack of video / liveview etc. Old (but long lasting) battery, small lcd.

The positives are a superb viewfinder, full frame, excellent Af and the cameras overall responsiveness is exceptional.

John.

If you are shooting landscapes and portraits, why do you need faster AF than the 5DII provides?

Short of the 1Ds MkIII, you aren't going to do any better than the 5D2... For your type of shooting.

7D is designed primarily as a sports/action camera. You say you're not a sports shooter, so doesn't sound like you need it.

7D and 5DII compliment each other in some ways, but not in others. They share batteries and chargers... Control layouts are similar (7D has some add'l buttons). But once you are shooting, working in the menus, using the AF, etc., the 50D and 5DII are actually more similar.

I agree with a couple other posts... New, different or better lenses will do a lot more to improve your shots, than any new camera body can.

Mainly a portrait shooter? Buy a 135/2 for use on your 5dII.

Landscape shooter? Might want some wide primes. And/or a nice tripod.

Need two cameras for some reason? A second 5DII would be your best bet for the type of shooting you do. Or just keep the 50D.

I don't find 5DII to be "miles ahead" of 50D at all. In fact I've made images with 50D that I was certain I'd shot with 5DII when I was making prints from them, until I looked at the EXIF and saw that I'd used 50D (usually with one prime or another). Micro adjust your lenses on both cameras (primes are much easier to MA well, than zooms are). Avoid under exposure, use reasonable ISO settings, and the 50D can shine very, very well.

The main "upgrades" 7D brings over 50D are: more AF points to work with, a bit bigger/brighter 100% viewfinder, slightly faster frame rate, more focus modes that are mostly designed to work with specific action situations (exception: precision AF mode, good for macro & portraits, but slower), increased sealing and durability, 63 zone metering system, and a few other things. 7D has the finest spot metering of any current Canon model, but the 5DII is very close. 7D is a fine camera, but IMO the 50D holds up very well in comparison... Unless for some reason you really, really need your still camera to be able to shoot video.

Besides, I suspect that we'll be hearing about a 60D any day now... And I bet it will basically be a 50D with video capabilities added.

Just out of curiosity where have you found a new 7D for $1575 Canadian taxes in? The best I've seen is about $1680 after tax.

Any ways if you really feel the 5dII is that much better than the 50D then I doubt that you'll really be happy with the 7D either. Sounds like you may be better off going with the 1DsII.

I'm not expecting the camera's picture quality to be better than the 5D II. I just wanted to know which had a better picture quality between the two. I can buy the camera's for 5% above cost and only pay the gst and I use my business pst exempt number. I have till June 30th to beat the rip off hst. :(

I'm not expecting better picture quality than the 5D Ii from the older 1Ds mkII or the 7D.

Just wonder out of the two camera which has better picture quality. It's not big factor if the camera does not have live view or video. The times I need I can use the 5D II.

When a few comment to buy better lens what better lens is there for the $$ that is reasonable priced.

I can't afford to buy say a 200mm F2 IS lens.

I went to the dealer this week as I told him call when he gets the 70-200mm F2.8 IS II lens, as there are in short supply. I played with it for 30mins with the 5D II and my left arm could feel the pain. :p

I figure being a casual shooter and not a wedding photographer I will end up using the 70-200 F4 IS more often as it's half the weight.

So far I have a 85mm F1.8, 100mm F2.8 macro, 24-105mm F4 IS, 70-200mm F4 IS and a tamron 17-50mm f2.8 that's been calibrated perfectly for the apc camera.

I might be leaning towards the 7D since its new and will have warranty and sell the 50d to the friend.

The 2.0" screen might be a little too small for my eyes as I'm already having problems seeing the 3" on the 5D II :D

Well, he is already keeping his FF 5DII. They why is there a need for another FF body???
You can keep your 5DII for portraits/landscape, as there's no camera better than this, and use 7D for everything else. I think most people here are misreading that you'll keep your FF body as well.
5DII/7D compliment each other like a married couple ;)
