The Mac mini is a "real" computer so therefore it is allows to be sold here in the Marketplace section.

An iPhone, for instance, or an iPod isn't a real computer. The Mac Mini can actually be used to do useful photo image processing and storage.

What about an iPad? I have seen a couple pop up, but they seem to dissapear shortly thereafter? (Just curious for reference, I don't plan on selling one)

The key word is "useful". The iPad's too short on storage to be a viable backup solution, even once you've bought the extras necessary, and, like a Netbook, is deathly slow at processing your images. Maybe once Apple upgrades it to a useful amount of storage and allows two-way data transfer without crawling through so many hoops. At present, there are storage cards that will hold more than an iPad can, and they cost less.

So, just to be clear, iPads can't be sold on POTN because its moderators don't think they make a useful contribution to photographic workflow?

Not that I have one to sell, just curious.

That is a slightly antagonistic way to put it, but yes.

We have to draw a line somewhere, currently the iPad and iPhone and Nokia N97 and other media consumption type devices are on the not allowed side of the line.
Understand it isn't just the iPad that isn't allowed in the market place. I have a Nokia phone that will display photos and can run some basic image editing apps and it's not allowed in the market place.

Also understand that it's not a fixed and solid line that will never move.
We constantly look at and re-evaluate these sorts of things all the time. Several Mods own and use iPads, so we are not coming at it from a point of ignorance either.
We might find a compelling reason to allow the iPad into the market place tomorrow, or it might be in 6 months, or a new and different device might come along that fits in instead.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Great response, thanks :)

Not sure if you've seen this: http://vimeo.com/12206105 (external link)

Or this: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com …17/using-the-ipad-on-set/ (external link)

But it seems the iPad is already receiving plenty of use on the shooting side of imagery, even if it's not a great PP tool ... I'm certainly considering buying one because I think it has a place in my photography business ... so yeah, that's why I was curious. The current position makes sense, though ... for the time being, at least ;)

This one? http://www.rangefindermag.com …/RF0610_iPad_Cincotta.pdf (external link)

Sorry, but that article is a subjective view to one method of presentation and signup, nothing more.

Jon, I must respectfully disagree.

I have a 3G 32 GB ipad. It is a fantastic tool for on site shoots. It will easily hold a backup of images from the majority of an shoot you can encounter (except for the largest of weddings). It backs up fairly quickly. You can see the images large and clear. RAW files look great and clear.

And the great thing is you can move these images quickly to the web. Just this weekend, after we set a shoot for a magazine ad, I shot a couple jpegs, uploaded them to flickr, called the editor, and took his suggestions by phone. Whole thing took 10 minutes, but saved us a potential reshoot, and established me with a customer as a forward thinking, customer focused photographer.

Like most things in life, its not how much storage you have -- its how you use it. :)

This space for rent.

You can do what your describing with a lot of devices, not just an iPad.

But that's not the point.
The point is POTN has to draw a line somewhere, and line is currently drawn at devices who's main purpose is use as photographic tools.
While you maybe able to use the iPad as a photographic tool, it is not the main purpose it was designed for, nor is it a major function of its design.
