You can do what your describing with a lot of devices, not just an iPad.

But that's not the point.
The point is POTN has to draw a line somewhere, and line is currently drawn at devices who's main purpose is use as photographic tools.
While you maybe able to use the iPad as a photographic tool, it is not the main purpose it was designed for, nor is it a major function of its design.

Of course you could make the exact same argument about the Mac Mini (not designed primarily for use as a photographic tool), but you don't. This can only mean a.) the collective position of the mods is anti-iPad; or b.) devices like these, useful as they may be for photography, are not welcome for trading at POTN because doing so would open the proverbial marketplace floodgates.

(b) makes complete sense and I'd totally respect that position. If it's (a) ... well, I hope it's not (a) ;)

:lol::lol: I can assure its not (a)
Several Mods own iPads. If I had the disposable income I would be tempted to get one myself, but it wouldn't for anything photography related :)

So long and thanks for all the flash

The only certain result of any decision made by a moderator is that someone will argue about it, right?

I'm not selling mine, so it's a mute point for me. I think it's a great tool, and wanted to point out that while it's not perfect, it has much to offer beyond it's "novelty".

The interesting thing is that this decision isn't based on ONE moderator, but ALL moderators. We discuss these things in depth!

kinda surprised this thread hasn't been locked as it seems to have run its course.

I've stayed away 'cause I don't have a dog in this fight, though that's never stopped me before.

I'll say a few things halfheartedly, and with due respect.

Does it really matter that the mods will not allow iPads to be sold here? I don''t think so.

Does it really matter if an iPad or two is/was attempted to be sold here? I don't think so.

The mods and Pekka do an amazing job policing this place from the likes of people like me ;) and far be it for me to argue with any of them.

But, and only joking, if something such as this is that important that all mods need to talk about it, you guys/gals got too much time on your hands.

I've seen iPod Touch devices sold here. Maybe those just slipped by.

The iPad is definitely a photographic tool that can be used to a much greater degree than those photo banks like the Epson and Canon which was never sold in the USA to my knowledge.

So really, does anybody think if it is a permitted item, that all of a sudden there's going to be hundreds of them flooding the classifieds here?

Okay, I've had my say. Close the thread. ;)

Nah. I bought the 32gb 3G model for my daughter for her birthday a few weeks back. She loves it. I just found the OEM Apple case in stock and mailed that to her.

To me, it's just an iPhone on steroids, and I have the iPhone which I love, except the horrible AT&T lack of coverage and constant dropped calls. That won't stop me from getting the new iPhone4 though.

I may get the iPad, but I'm just not sure what I'd use it for other than reading magazines and storing photos and viewing them, maybe a bit of internet viewing.

I have two MacBook Pro 17", one of which I rarely use, an 8 core dual processor Mac Pro tower which I'm typing this on. Enough is enough, no? :)

Does this put a different light on the iPad's usefulness as a photo device?
