While I am late to the party and beating the dead horse- In my opinion, if we allow photo storage devices like an Epson P3000 to be sold here than Ipads should be sold as well. Just my 2c.

PS: Yes, I own an Ipad. Yes, I use it for photography. No, it is not for sale!

When I do my photography I also use, or have used:

20mm Electrical conduit.
Masking Tape.
Duct Tape
Various colours of A2 card
A0 transparencies
A golf trundler
A Honda Accord
A Toyota Granvia
A Pair of steel cap boots
10m of light blue mesh
10m of white fabric
A cell phone
An LCD TV
A step ladder
and a Roast Turkey.

Of course none of those things would ever be suitable for sale on these forums, nor would I expect them to be

So long and thanks for all the flash

To be honest, I don't see POTN as an ideal marketplace for devices like iPads. It just makes more sense to move them elsewhere. Same goes for other general-purpose hardware IMO. Including Mac Minis ;)

At the same time, I find it pretty amusing that our mods deem it necessary to debate the usefulness of the iPad as a photographic tool before establishing a policy on its saleability or otherwise. (a) it's a waste of their time (no-one can agree on this stuff); (b) it leaves their decision open to challenge (oh look, an iPad-centric workflow!); (c) it risks them looking silly (e.g. to people who make extensive photographic use of their iPad).

I'd much prefer you just list items that aren't acceptable for sale. There's no need to justify decisions like this, especially when the criteria you're trying to use is itself open to debate.

Luke, you are correct in all you say, however. (You knew that was coming didn't you? ;-)a)

1) Posting a list of items excluded from the MarketPlace would be too cumbersome and lead to; "Well it wasn't on the list". We list our criteria and expect others to follow our reasoning.

2) We try to be as open and transparent as possible in our decision making, hoping that the membership understands our reasoning even if they disagree.

3) We really try to invoke the "Because we said so." rule as little as possible. It just not make anyone happy.

We also understand that as some of these technologies mature they may be included as photo equipment but we have to draw the line somewhere. Besides telling you where the line is we frequently explain how the line came to be. On the other hand for some folks the "Jeez, if we have to explain it, you would not understand it anyway" principle applies. :-)

For the record, I was not questioning the MODs decision or eternal wisdom. I was simply adding my opinion as encouraged in open forums such as POTN.
Certainly masking tape and an Ipad are not in the same category.

I agree that a comprehensive list isn't possible, but a list of categories with examples shouldn't be too hard to populate (you could steal eBay's, even :p)
