I am selling my 40D and going back to my Xsi/450D. The 40D is a great camera but it is so heavy for me and I find due to its weight that I am just not getting it out and using it as much as I want to/should.
What I would like to do, because I am able to get some cash in my downgrade to the 450D is get a very good compact camera with great IQ.
Let me say that I would like to stay around $400. I will be shooting indoors and out and I have kids so something reasonably fast would be good.

I want something that I can keep in my bag/purse all the time so that I never miss anything (I don't need it to be super compact... my bags are pretty big). I will bring out my DSLR for more formal shots and special occasions. Most of my lenses are primes and are used for portraiture. I also would like something with decent video as I often like to do small clips of my kids.

I've read some reviews, but I'd love to hear opinions from people who have actually tried some and have opinions.

The Canon S90 would be the best choice to complement your SLR. It also has RAW capability and a fast lens of f2.0 at the widest setting. Its sensor is quite good in low light situations too. I use it myself, it's a superb little camera that takes great shots.

The G11 might also fit the bill too but it is a little larger than the S90.

I know that one just shoots VGA video, have you done any clips with it? This is not as important to me but it is a nice bonus for the money.

I've haven't really used the video side of it enough to offer a fair opinion on that. I know there is a new Canon IXUS 300HS/PowerShot SD4000 camera that has recently come out that does HD video and has a fast lens but no RAW mode but that's as much as I know on that one.

So I played around in best buy today a bit. It was annoying though because they didn't have the batteries charged in several cameras including the S90. I did get my hands on it though to feel it and that back dial which of course is way too loose.

I also looked at the sx20 which is way bulkier than I would have thought I would want, however it has some great features that may suit my needs.

For my xsi I will have a 50, 60, 85, and the kit lens. I do not own a telephoto anymore. The sx20 may be great for those needs and it will give me the hd video I want. Hm... more to ponder.

The S90 is a perfect compliment to your DSLR. I've taken 2 trips with my 50D & various lenses as well as the S90. Having RAW is a huge plus. The video is quite good and adequate for my needs. HD video would certainly be better (maybe in the next version) but it certainly meets my needs.

I will be taking 2 trips out of the country in the next 3 weeks and, because of space & other considerations, I will be traveling only with the S90. Even though the quality is not as good as my 50D it will meet my needs on these 2 trips and the size could not be better. Perfect travel camera which can capture a lot of good pics.
