First of all i know that this is a Canon forum but it's just so good that i thought that i might as well ask, im a long time reader and a first time poster....

Although i'm using Nikon.. I thought i might ask...

So.. The lens i own is a Nikon 200mm f/2 VR G and i'd love to use it wide open on a sunny day or a bright overcast day without overly exposing the photo. So i'd like to know what kind of ND filter you guys out there who use this focal length and also this F stop lens would use....

Thanks in advance,

Haim.

It really depends on how bright the light really is. See how far you have to stop your lens down to get proper exposure, and that will tell you what ND filter you need.

I would think that the ND filter you use is independent of the lens - other than the size of the filter. I don't think overblown pictures is really a big problem. With the lowest ISO setting your camera has on and a really fast shutter speed, you wshould be fine without a ND filter. Unless you are looking to slow your shutter speed down, then you may want to look at ND filters.

Just go out and shoot with it. You've got such a nice lens, play with it some to find out how it works on a sunny day. Don't worry about a ND filter at this point.

How much you want to lower the shutter speed will determine the filter you want to use. Just think how many more stops you'd like and get that. Obviously though, things more than not depend on how much light there is in your picture.

That lens uses a drop in filter. You will need to buy the appropriate Nikon filter for it. For instance, here is the polarizer for it:

By the way....welcome to the Canon forum ! You are certainly welcome to hang out here....we have many Nikon shooters here.

EDIT: looking further....it appears you should have the filter holder, so all you would need is a 52mm ND filter. You might check further, because you may have to use a "thin" filter in there.
It looks like b+W filters in that size are about $42. That is the brand I use....I've always had good luck with them.

Do you want to slow the shutter speed down so you can keep using f/2 i BRIGHT sunlight? Or do you want to slow the shutter speed down to get the "silky water" effect (where you are stopping down quite a bit) ?

Either way, there's nothing inherently "special" about using ND filters for a $6000 lens compared to a $100 lens. Exposure is exposure, it doesn't know the price tag of your lens ;)

yeah i'd like a B+W i use them on all of my lenses too.

Thanks for the comments. Yes it does have the filter drawer all you need is a filter :)

I already own a ND400 so i'm not looking for longer exposures etc... i'm just wanting about 1/100 to 1/250 shutter speed at around the f/2 mark....

Would an ND8 be alright?
( i dont own an ND8 so cant tell :( )

Today, in a bright sunlight, I used ISO 100, f5.6, and metered about 1/1000. If You want to use f2.0, it's 3 stop faster than f5.6. If You want to use 1/125, its another 3 stop. You have to use a 6 stop ND filter (ND64) for ISO 100, f2.0, 1/125 (rough calculation, it depends how bright the sunlight is).

So based on these figures if you can go to 1/8000 you don't even need an ND filter.

I take it you want to pan the cars? Otherwise, just set ISO to 100, and let the shutter speed go to 1/8000s.

Any reason you need that slow of a shutter speed for people?

I'm guessing for motion blur on pan shots for cars and sync a flash/strobe without a high speed sync for people. That's only a guess though.
