In a month I will be shooting at a dog show, it will be indoors, not sure how limited the space will be. I'm about to buy the 135L, anyone use this for cat and dog shows? I'm a little worried it might be too long on a 5D if space is limited. I'm considering to also buy the 85/1.8.

Anyway, would like to hear any thoughts on these lenses for cat and dog shows.

It seems so much would be dependent on the location. Distance, lighting and such. Both are very nice lenses capable of delivering very sharp images.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Why wouldn't you also consider the 100mm 2.0? Personally I would think the longer the better. Of the 2 you mention, I'd go with the 135mm 2.0. Are you down on the main floor or up in the stands? If your 10-15 rows up, I'd also consider the 200mm 2.8. If you're on the main floor, you may want to look at the 100mm 2.0.

Either the 135 or 85 would be a good choice if you can get close enough.
Are you shooting them in an arena whilst being shown or up close?

So definitly, yes 85mm is perfect for indoor rings .... and F1.8 should be really good ...

For outdoor, rings are bigger so I would prefer 135L2.0 and 300L2.8

100mm L macro, IS, close ups, fast focusing, but tbh any of the L primes will do a great job.

I found 85L (on FF) was too short to shoot kittens the way I wanted because of the relatively long MFD. The 135L was perfect though!

I am going to a dog show later this summer myself and I bought the 135L for it last Christmas :D I believe the brick would do great too if you don't stand too far away from the dogs.

I have considered the 100/2 but between that one and 85/1.8 I think I would pick the 85 since I will also be doing music events, some in local cafes where 135mm probably would be too long and 100mm and 135mm seems to close to me.

I have already decided on the 135L, was mainly wondering how well that lens and 85/1.8 would preform in dog shows and what lenses people that do such events prefer to use.

As far as I know it will be in an arena where you can walk around so I might be able to get up close. This will be a smaller dog show so I might have to get both 85mm and 135mm to be on the safe side.

@newworld666: great shots! I really like the first one, was that with the 135L?

@MaDProFF: 100L macro is on my wish list, had the older one which was great but pretty slow AF and I'm not sure a macro lens would be fast enough for indoor events with moving targets.

The focusing is pretty fast on the 100L, I Have one, and would not have recommended it otherwise, the 85L is slow at focusing, though not as bad as many make out if you are close to the focus point you are focusing on, though never tried 85L on a 5D, but on a 5D MK2 it is slowish, on my 1D MK4 it is quite a lot quicker. 135L very very fast.

Yes I've heard the 100L is faster than the old one, that's why I sold my old and planning on buying the 100L soon but probably not this summer. 85L seems like a really nice lens, some amazing photos has been posted with that on in the lens sample thread :) But it's too expensive for me at the moment. I think I will get both the 135L and 85/1.8 after all, it seems like both are useful for what I need.

.

It was a test all were done with 85L1.2II ..

http://photos.corbi.eu …D=12452177&AlbumKey=eyfgY (external link)

.. I was more or less wondering whether AF AI focus could fix moving/running dogs .. it worked like a charm ..
Of course sharpness, thin dof and bokeh are specific marks of 85L1.2II ..
but 85F1.8 should give pretty good results too

I enjoyed the photos on that site, would love to give the 85L a try but think I'll try 85/1.8 and see how it works for me. Thanks for sharing some images, sometimes they tell more than words :)
