Just wondering....

I realize you can adjust white balance easily in post processing. However, I am wondering how to effectively use the S-R LR Warming Polarizer (and the LB Color, etc.). That is, what is the procedure for setting the WB in the camera when using these filters and others like them? I imagine that auto WB will adjust "out" the effect of the filter and "try" to neutralize...right?

What would it matter? Meaning, since you can change it in pp, why are you concerned. Perhaps I am not following you, but I am curious.

Check out their blog...seems a lot of photogs are using these filters to a great extent. And with much success. Seems intriguing to me.

No doubt, they are top shelf filters. I have the 3 stop soft grad ND and will likely be buying a Vari-N-Duo ND soon myself. I am just not sure why the WB setting matters as you can change it in pp. But I am slow like that sometimes. When using polarizers and grad nd's I don't give thought to the WB, I just change it in pp and pick the one that looks best. At the time of capture, there is little thought to WB for me personally.

I have several S-R polarizers (LB Color Combo, Gold/Blue, Vari-N-Duo)...the only filter that really needs a WB adjustment in post is the Gold/Blue. I simply set the camera WB to daylight when using either of the filters and deal with the Gold/Blue in post. None of the other polarizers require any deliberate WB adjustments to account for any type of color correction (at least I don't see a need to do so).

Just want to clarify....do you ever set your WB to auto when using the Color Combo or Vari-N-Duo?
And...do you have a warming polarizer? If so, do you feel as though your images would be warmed by the filter or would auto WB compensate for the warming effect of the filter?
(I guess my point is....how does one benefit from the warming polarizer instead of the neutral polarizer?)

With all the above filters you mentioned(Color Combo,Var-N-Duo, & Warming Polarizer) you don't have to worry about WB. I usually shoot in Auto and adjust later in PP.

I also own the warming polariser and it does what it's advertised to do. It does increase the WB temp but, I usually push it a tad further in post. Here's a few sample images with that filter w/ no adjustment. These are straight OOC with only tweaks to sat and contrast.

On occasion, I set the WB to auto, but it depends on what/how I'm shooting. If I'm doing focus stacking for macro, multiple images for a pano (usually no polarizer for these shots), or multiple images for blending, then most definitely I'll take the WB out of auto. For static, single-image landscape shots, I'll more often than not have the WB set to daylight...one less thing to worry about. Like I said, just depends on what I'm shooting.

The S-R Vari-N-Duo incorporates a warming polarizer...sorry, but can't answer whether or not auto-WB would compensate and "cancel" out the warming effects. Now you've given me something to think about...maybe I'll slap on the Vari-N-Duo, dial out the ND portion of the filter, and see if the auto-WB has any effect.
