Found this pair on a hike today. I've seen WHPs once or twice, but this was my first try at shooting them. I need a lot more practice shooting in the woods.

Also got my first Western Bluebird. Not the greatest, but this is a hobby and if I get a perfect shot of every bird the first time I'll run out of stuff to do.

Nice shots, tough with the strong contrasting black and white. Well done.

That would be a tough bird to shoot Ken. They are a fine looking woodpecker, you are lucky to see them. Congratulations on both species. That first shot is really cute!

Great find, Ken. I'm with you, a photo need not be technically perfect to be of interest and value. An unusual bird, such as this, is what makes it special.

I agree with that. A lot more average shots are posted than national geographic shots and they all get a look and tell their own story. I mean look at all the UFO followers, of the millions of UFO shots, not a single one has been clear, yet half the world believes in them.

Thanks for the comments. I figured you guys would find the bird interesting. It's not too hard to find in the right places, but its range is limited. I hope I can get back to this nest with a little more time to spend. I would have been happy to spend an hour there yesterday, but my wife and dog wanted to get on with the hike.

hello Ken, nice shots all in all, I have not heard of this pecker before either. You did well with them, lucky to see a pair anytime much less get a shot. I have always found that the all balck or mostly white birds are very hard to get exposed right, but when you have a bright white head and black body thats even harder. Great shooting!
also I think that your wife and dog should have been more willing to hang out for a while longer but thats just me. (hee hee)

Well my wife is the one who spotted the birds, so I can't complain too much.

Well, if you kept them waiting, I'll bet the dog wouldn't understand.
