A coworker captured two Stag Beetles for me this last week so I could photograph these impressive creatures. Here are a couple of shots, this one was a little over 50mm/2" long.

Very good shots, very sharp.
Were they handheld?
What lense and settings did you use?
Regular flash or ringflash?

Thanks guys!

@Canon Shooter...here are the stats from my exif:
Camera: Canon EOS 40D (external link) Exposure: 1 Aperture: f/16.0 Focal Length: 100 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: 0 EV Flash: On, Fired
I used a tripod to take the shot with one flash (430ex) on camera bouncing it and one radio triggered to the right of my camera. I put a piece of driftwood in my lightbox and shot him there...they can fly so I didn't want to chance him flying off on me so I shot him indoors. I am supposed to bring him back to my coworker who is donating the beetle to a local museum for kids.

The lens used was a Tokina 100mm f2.8 AT-X Pro D.
Thanks for checking them out!

oh...I guess I did have one hand held shot :) Hand held and hand held camera shot!

good setting to show him off, logs are their thing. Had a female fly in the room tonight but too absorbed by tennis on TV to take very good shots.
