I went out looking for a badger yesterday and struck out. I got to shoot a few yellow headed blackbirds. I also ran into a pika later which was fun. I made a pika sound but it didn't get him to come out. Then when I used a great horned owl hoot he came right out. Who would have figured?

Their call is wierd. They sound like a red wing blackbird in spots, but then they do this wierd ker klunk and other vocal sounds that are odd. Very entertaining and cool to listen to but the mosquitos from the water they live on aren't...

Nice shots. They do make a weird call, a book I have states this: directed toward closer birds, they have a few clucking notes followed by a long, nasal buzz: kuh-koh-koh-koh waaaaaaa, and the call directed toward birds at a distance, consists of several fluid notes often followed by a thrill or a buzz: kuuk-ku, WHAA-Kaaaa.
