I shoot sports for a small sports newspaper mostly baseball, football, softball, soccer, wrestling and basketball. I'm looking to upgrade to a newer body.

I currently shoot with a 30D and I'm not sure what body to go with to decrease my OOF shots, especially in lower light situations. Recently I shot a high school baseball conference championship game played in a minor league stadium and I had many shots that were OOF. Seemed like the 30D couldn't focus fast enough for the 70-200 lens. What would be a good body to upgrade to? I'll probably buy used. Thanks

Depending on how much you want to spend, I recommend either a 7D or a 1D III. Both have great IQ with the 1D III being just a little better in the lower light situations. I have a 7D that is fabulous during soccer and baseball games...haven't taken any sport shots indoors though!!

If you are wanting to save a few dollars, take a look at a used 1D MkII or 1D MkIIn. I have both and they have fantastic AF. You get the build, fast AF and FPS of the MkIII, but at 1/3 of the price.

I used the 40D for HS sports and upgraded to a 7D. It's a great body for sports. My 40D now goes to most games as my 2nd body with a 17-50 f/2.8 attached.

The 40D is a great camera. The ONLY reason I got rid of mine was so that I would have the same batteries and menu system as my MkIIn. Other than that, I wouldn't have gotten rid of it.

The IIn performs better at higher ISO than the II and the III is about a stop better in high ISO conditions than the IIn.

AF performance and accuracy is probably better with the IIn unless you find a good version of the III.

If you are covering a lot of events on a regular basis and are forced to shoot in less than perfect weather conditions it is well worth the extra money to get something from the 1D line.

That's smart. It did take some time to be able to quickly switch between bodies without having to really think about it. I also have to carry spare batteries for both cameras.

It was a tough decision to make, but got a great MkII in the process. I really liked the 40D and the large screen was nice.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think I will look for a used MkII or III. Very Helpful
