Can't open Gimp tifs in DPP

Hello folks.
I've noticed that when I work on a file in Gimp then save it as a .tif, DPP can't open it. I've tried saving it with no compression and with LZW and it doesn't make any difference.
Does anyone know why? I sure hate the idea that once I work on a shot in Gimp I can never go back to DPP with it.

Thanks

I'm not aware that DPP can open tiffs. DPP is a raw processor - once your raw data has been converted to an image, it needs to be thereafter edited as such, in gimp or wherever.

Aha! I finally caught you on one, Damo.8)

DPP is supposed to open and edit tifs on its RGB tab, just as it does for jpgs. However, it is very selective in which RGB images it likes and which it rejects. Sometimes a file it doesn't like will even crash it. There have been at least two other threads here in the last few days, and many over the years, that asked about variations of this behavior. However, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what aspects of a file are not acceptable to DPP when other applications open it with no problem. In many cases I suspect it is metadata or the embedded thumbnail rather than the main image.

LOL! Touché!

*shrugs*

I've never seen any point in going back to a raw program. Once an image is pixels, it belongs in a pixel editor. I've never baked a cake, then decided I wanted to go back and mill the flour a bit more.

Well, it would be pretty weird for DPP not to be able to open tif files, since it can create them.

As far as why to use it, it's a bummer when I open a folder in DPP and some of the images are just gray squares instead of pictures. That's what happens with the tif files from Gimp. I'd rather be able to see what that picture looks like without having to open another program. Doesn't mean I want to work on the picture in DPP again.

There are many options when saving tiffs. PC or Mac byte order (makes little difference these days) as well as compression methods. I'd make sure GIMP isn't adding some odd compression that DPP can't decompress.

Yeah, that's why I tried saving it two different ways, but there's nothing in the Gimp docs about it. I'm hoping some gimp expert will enlighten us.

I keep my original RAW "negatives" completely seperate from the post processed TIFF's I create. A whole different filing system. That way I if I want to open DPP and work on other RAW images I don't see anything but RAW's or if I'm in Photoshop reworking a TIFF I never see any references to RAW.

I've seen DPP act in some crazy ways toward tiffs as well, in my case ones from Photoshop. I don't know about ones generated by DPP itself -- I've never heard of problems with those, but for the general output from external editors I'd say it is not reliable. It's hard to say why, maybe how it reacts to Exif that's written by these editors.

With Photoshop tiffs it's been inconsistent -- opening a file once, then freezing up another time. I'd say it would be wise to either keep tiffs separate like Richard suggests, or simply not to look to DPP as an "all purpose" file browser.

It seems to handle jpegs fine, though...

Well, that's too bad about DPP.
I keep finished images separate from ones that are "in progress" or "not started yet" but I don't really like the idea of having separate groups for the "unfinished" ones. Just seems like, if they're not finished, they belong together.
Looks like digiKam will be my all-purpose browser, since it can open anything.
Thanks alot, folks.

One of the threads was mine - problems with DPP opening jpg's in the same directory that were created with the same app with the exact same workflow. Opened some, would not open others.

I spent time trying to resolve it, even going to the extent of comparing and analyzing file headers in a hex editor. I finally gave up. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

So my time-saving tip would be to just give up and move on and work around it.

Just an added note. For what it is worth. I came to this thread because DPP would not show my jpg exports from GIMP. Unchecking 'progressive' in the detailed settings of the jpg export solved it!

No idea whether this will hold in all exports, or whether it is just a lucky coincidence today with this particular photo.

kind regards,

Henk
