In my experience, it's hard not to blow out the sky without under-exposing the subject..

What's the best way to accomplish this?

I'd recommend cloning over the triangular shadow right over you tag. It should also be easy enough to get rid of the car and other background noise (except for the light). I like the skater's shadow.
