Hey all! Just browsing the web looking to purchase a B5D-L used and then i chanced upon this website. The guy's opinion is that the metal flexes and causes motion blur on both the RRS and Kirk L plates. Anyone have this issue? Any comments from both sides of the fence?

http://users.gsinet.net/pjwhite/rrs.htm (external link)

p.s. I am still looking for a B5D-L and depending on what's discussed here, might consider purchasing one from anyone who pm's me (:

Cheers,
Zexun

One flaw in his testing is he didn't take shots withoiut the bracket for comparison. The shutter speeds he used are within the range that the mirror slap will have an affect.

I could brain someone with my RRS L-plate and I don't know if it would flex. There would be more flex between lens and lens mount than between the body and L-plate when it's screwed on tight!

I wouldn't worry about it.

I have an RRS L-plate on one of my bodies, and that thing is rigid.

Yes I have an L plate on my 1D2n as well. Probably should test that one for myself.

He didn't use mirror lock up perhaps?

Anyone got an L plate on a non gripped camera like the 5D / 7D and have a shapeshifter? Do you know if they fit in properly?

Well, he claims to have mounted the camera to the head landscape and flopped it to get portrait as a counter-test and says that came out better than using the portrait orientation on the RRS L plate. I wonder if he had the plate firmly screwed down to the camera, or if he put some kind of "protective" layer between plate and body.

See how the 1D fits nicely into the pouch that way? An L plate might make the pouch stretch too much no?

I think the camera body would flex more than a RRS L plate, I have one for my MKIII and would expect it to take several hundred pounds of force to make it flex.

I would imagine I could drive over my L plate with my car and not bend it.

Mirror slap can cause a lot of movement if you don't have it locked up and are on a tripod while shooting lower shutter speeds.

Yea Im pretty sure this guy is very wrong... After youve held pretty much ANYTHING from Kirk or RRS you quickly realize it flat out doesnt GET any more solid that that. The RRS L Plates are cut out of a single block of aluminum and wouldnt flex or vibrate if you tried!

However for the 1DmarkII / N / DS models, the portrait orientation plate leaves a space in between itself and the left side of the camera for similar framing purposes. If anything, this probably does affect a bit, yes?

I plan on performing tests on my L plate. It's a Really Right Stuff B5D2 for 5D Mark II. The testing will be performed with a RRS BH-55 LR and Gitzo GT3541LS. I can assure you my testing will be very scientific-like. Once I complete the tests, I'll analyze and interpret the results and present it to you in a report.
