Question about lens plates

I'm planning on buying an RRS L-plate for my 7D and possibly a lens plate. I have an L-plate for my 30D and have no real concerns about the L-plate for the 7D.

However, I'm going on a trip and renting a 100-400 IS to complement my 70-200 f4 IS. I bought aftermarket tripod rings for both lenses but wasn't sure about what/if lens plates I should buy. The 70-200 f4 is pretty stable when on the 30D with 30D on a tripod, so I'd expect the same with the 7D. The 100-400 probably won't do so well.

So the question is, if I buy the lens plate for the 100-400 now (expecting to upgrade the 70-200 f4 to an f2.8 at some point) would this plate still work on the smaller tripod ring? It wouldn't be a perfect fit, but would it cause any problems?

The one I use for my 100-400 is an RRS L84 I believe, and since they are designed pretty universally, Im sure it would work with your 70-200 as well. At worst it would be just a little too big LOOKING, but functionally it would be fine.

The 100-400 uses an L84, same as the 70-200 2.8 lenses; the one for the 70-200 f/4 is the B-82; It's a tad wider and shorter but I see no reason why you couldn't use the L84 on the 70-200 f/4's collar.

It's a pity that Canon don't make a range of A-S plates compatible with their tripod ring bases. I use a Markins plate on my 100-400L and it is a bit of an eyesore. Kirk make a limited range of Nikon lens rings that incorporate an A-S plate and had intended extending that to certain Canon lenses, however the global recession put a stop to that!
