Something loose internally?

I was changing lens earlier today why talking to some people. As one of them was leaving, I naturally waved good bye to them with my 35L in my hands and I noticed that something seems like it is loose inside. It wasn't a rattle, but rather like something was slightly loose inside. As I shook it again, I confirmed that something is just slightly loose and shifting around inside the lens. I know I should just not shake the lens, but i'm curious if this is normal? could someone check their 35L to see if does the same? Thanks!

Was your lens hood on at the time? Sometimes they can rattle.

nope, hood was off. the hood actually fits very snug!

the sound is more of a muffled knock rather than a rattle. i think the best way i can describe it is as if the inside diameter of the body was 3" and the diameter of the internal element was 2.8", there's a 0.2" gab that causes the knocking.

I went and got mine and shook it (felt somewhat odd shaking a lens) and it makes a muffled rattle also - sounds like the elements shifting a little. Shaking the rest of my lenses shows that they also make the same noise so one can only assume that it's nothing to worry about.

It could be the aperature blades? I have noticed a similar noise too.

It could be the aperature blades? I have noticed a similar noise too.

i'm assuming that it would be normal for the aperature blades to shift a little?
