I wish we'd had a few more days over at our beach. It was perfect. I don't think we need sand permits here. I'm pretty sure that if it's allowed (some beaches it is, some it isn't) then you can drive on it. ![]() You guys have a whole different kind of beach. From what I see you have mostly fishermen, outdoor people, photographers, and dog walkers. We have beaches like that and Leyla and I gravitate to them. Unfortunately most east coast beaches are either developed with big beach houses and little public access points or are developed with boardwalks and arcades and 8 billion city people are writhing all over them playing with bright plastic crap they bought at wall mart that will break before they leave. Those beaches are generally highly regulated with tons of rules, no dogs, curfews, gah. We avoid those beaches. There are state and federal areas that are more natural with bugs and uncombed sand. That is usually enough to keep a lot of city folk away. There are generally entrance fees(like $8) for these areas and for a season fee of over $100 you can drive on some remote beaches as long as you get a permit and have proper recovery equipment in the truck in case you get stuck. Downtown SD is not to bad also, as there has been alot of construction and stuff going on down there. Those are all coastal communities and are a bit upscale. Del Mar in particular has done everything possible to discourage anyone from other parts of the county from visiting thier city, including enforcing parking meters 24/7 and banning smoking anywhere in public in the city. The other areas are not as bad, but still expensive to buy houses there. Skrim17 wrote in post #10441298 I shot with flash the whole time at the reception this weekend, I had no confidence that I would get fast enough shutter speeds for the dancing and games that were going on. In the sanctuary I used flash for fill as it had a wall of windows. I completely understand the term "expose for the background" but am not really sure how to do it, so I opted for fill. I think in general you lose a little of the 'richness' inherent in a non flash low light shoot, but I am glad I got the shots I did at the shutter speeds I needed. If you try to rely on the flash to provide fill, then sometimes it really doesn't work all that well. It's just the inherent nature of the Canon flash system. Sometimes it's better to expose for the background and let the flash handle the light on the foreground subject. John

It's just the inherent nature of the Canon flash system. Sometimes it's better to expose for the background and let the flash handle the light on the foreground subject. These two shots are a perfect example. In the first, I was exposing in Av for the foreground subject and let the flash act as fill. I was getting good exposure on the subject, but the bright background was blowing out. I switched to M and set the camera for proper exposure on the bright background. I then adjusted the flash output to give good exposure on the foreground subject. I still had to add a little fill light in PP to balance the exposure. I understand the concept but I don't know how to actually DO that. Hafta read up some more... Crissa

They get the full treatment and get bumped up to 1st class for nothing usually
