Assuming the logical *bang* event, marching in the Banner Elk NC 4th of July Parade in lovely, cool, high '60s, weather. The kind of weather we'll be revelling in from the 1st through the 25th. (Not Squished Notice.)

I wonder why NY's and Londoners, instead of complaining about pigeons...why they don't eat them. I've been watching travel shows where pigeons are considered a delicacy...since we have a plethora of them...why not?


yeah okay, that's my random wondering for the day.

We used to have pigeon stew sometimes when we were kids. All my relatives on farms were not too fond of the pigeons eating their feed, and crapping all over the place. Besides, they were pretty tasty. I haven't had any for many years now though.

She is living with me for good. Her dad had a stroke a number of years ago and is half paralyzed. He's rather verbally and emotionally abusive of her. When we picked her up her bed had a huge hole in it....melted in.....her room smelled like cat pee and the house was disgusting. The carpets used to be beige....now they're dark brown. His chair is black where his head and arms touch it. He has unfriended her on facebook and has said some really nasty things to her there. Her sister in law is just as bad. When she gathered all of her stuff it fit in one large suitecase. That's all she owned in the world.

So you will be skipping the crowds in sweaty downtown D.C?

Man, it hit 30ºC (86ºF) today. That is way too hot unless one could be drinking beer or mojitos all day.

Julia is going to spend 3 weeks with a friend from camp who can't come to camp this year. My brother is friends with her parents. She is nervous and the whole family is a little wary about the situation, but my brother and SIL are what they are and feel it is OK for their 9 year old to fly unaccompanied 18 hours and changing flights...

This is our salsa recipe. It can be medium hot or very spicy depending on the heat of the jalepenos you put in. Our first jalepenos were perfect. Our 2nd batch are VERY hot. Oh and we grill the tomatoes, jalepenos and anaheim peppers.


This salsa is like a thick chunky-ish picante salsa


5 lg tomatoes, peeled (we grilled them on the bbq long enough to get the skin to split for peeling) & quartered (don't empty out the seeds and juice)
3 jalepenos, (grilled optional) sliced
1 anaheim pepper, (grilled optional) devein and remove seeds then chop into chunks
1/2 7oz can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
2 sm bunches of cilantro (cut stems off and then cut each bunch into 1/3rds)
1/2 red onion (cut into quarters)
1 tsp of minced garlic
1 tsp of olive oil
the juice of 1 lime
1/4-1/2 cup of iced water


Grill the tomatoes until the skin starts splitting and peeling back. Grill the peppers if you desire. Then peel tomatoes.

In a food processor blend garlic, onion. Then add cilantro & blend. Then add the 1/2 can of chipotle peppers & blend.

Then add:
anaheim pepper chunks,
jalepenos
olive oil
lime juice
ice & water
and 1/2 the tomatoes.
Blend in a pulsing blend to get it to almost the consistency you desire. Then add the second 1/2 of the tomatoes & blend to desired texture.

Refrigerate at least 2 hrs before serving.

SAVED. That sounds great!

Well... Except for the anaheim peppers. I've never heard of those. I'll pay better attention next time I'm at the grocery store.

(And, I always prefer my salsa to be as hot as absolutely possible... )

Anaheims are the peppers used for 'green chilies' in the can.

Haven't been in DC for the 4th since 1986 at the latest. Blue Ridge is where it's at. We've got places we can see the fireworks from at least 5 different displays.

Were, and it ain't quitting until Wed. Beech Mountain, right close by where we are, is the coolest place East of the Rockies. Guess why we're splitting.
