sigma all the way. it's sharp at f1.4, comes with hood and pouch, full size HSM motor, BETTER bokeh. canon's bokeh is actually pretty harsh.

canon's cheaper but you gotta buy the hood seperately. soft until f2, has micro usm. the canon is essentially a 50mm f2

my copy of sigma is out of box no focus issue.

ummmm, heres a shot i took with the canon at f1.4. If there's an issue with sharpness or bokeh then i need my eyes tested.

^^ Dude, those files are too big for the forum.

1024 is the upper limit and they're something like 1680.

Bokeh on the Canon 50mm does suck at times (complicated backgrounds mainly) the Sigma 50mm looks smoother. You're pictures you put have mainly clean backgrounds or the complicated stuff is too far away to notice (baby image for example).

On the other hand the Sigma can handle a more messy background and still look relatively smooth.

BUT there are those issues with the QQ (I use to own the Canon and tried the Sigma, hoping to replace it, but was disappointed with the focus issues... of course, I wanted it on a 5D at the time, so I couldn't just micro-adjust).

Sigma 50 1.4 (at 1.4) shot in the shop (I didn't buy it) Quite a messy/complicated background (and close too) but it looks pretty smooth IMHO.

I have not tried the Sigma 50, but I am very happy with my Canon 50. I use it wide open all the time.

The Sigma is going to have less CA and veiling vs the Canon. The build on the Sigma is better, Heck the build on the Sigma 30mm is better then the Canon 50.

The Canon 50 is lighter then the Sigma.

With mine I need about +5 micro adjustment to nail the focus.

F2.5. These are full figure portraits and no I don't use 1.4.

F3.2. Of course, who shoots a bike race wide open at 1.4. The AF is accurate enough. It can be knocked off depending on the background.

My Sigma 50 came with the hood included. I was hesitant to buy this lens at first because of hearing about the focus issues but mine has turned out to be perfectly fine! I would definitely recommend this lens :)

the 50mm f1.4 canon i had was no good wide open. it's very sharp at f2, but at f1.4 the sharpness was not acceptable to me. i was shooting lowlight concerts at guitarists who don't move.

all reviews and lens tests published confirm my expereince with the 50mm f1.4 sharpness.

i think it's safe to say besides the focus issue, the sigma is a better product, just do you want to spend the extra moeny. to me it's worth it, and the focus issue can be fixed (if there is a focus issue to begin with)

Better in pretty much every way except for price, size, and added weight.

Size and added weight = better build
Canon is build like a plastic toy. Sigma has pro build and feel to it in my opinion.

I love my 85mm f/1.8 however, but it still looks funny to me.

I've had both and the Sigma was better in just about every regard. Past f4 the Canon had better sharpness particularly in the corners but that was about it. Rumors persist of a mkii so you may want to hold off. But then again there is a reason they call it the Sigmalux. If you intend to use the lens near wide open and need AF then it's the lens to get IMO.

I've both too. I tend to use Sigmalux most of the time as I prefer to shot @f1.4.
