John, re: the legacy options - I think you should see if you can beat this combo on the G11;

Also, re: stitching shots together - I could not have taken the macro shot today as a two shot stitch. It was very windy all day long, and the flowers would not stand still, so a stitch would not work.

I thought that the tele converter TC-DC58C 2X and the wide converter WC-DC58B 0.75X wasn't compatible with the G11. I have both that worked on my G9 (before it was stolen) and was going to sell them to my dad who has a G11 but thought they didn't work together.

Thought I read that the focal lengths were different.

It was worth trying them for me. I still have my G9, and both lenses work great on it. The tele seems to also work great on the G11, but the wide lens may require care in when and how to use it.

Here's a crop of the previous posting using the tele lens. I shot this from my deck at 280mm equiv. in RAW. I processed this in DPP, then cropped in PSE 8, and some minor adjustments for levels, contrast, and sharpening. I would say it did a great job from that distance for a 1/60 sec. hand held shot.

The wide lens may have been designed to work well across the G9's 35mm - 210mm equiv range, so the 28mm - 140mm zoom of the G11 can cause a problem. I'm going to continue to look for ways to use it, and try it and see what happens. My experience today was positive. I will have to keep track of what works, and what doesn't.

Oh Dennis you beat me to it, when I saw this I thought that has to be posted:)
I've found one on Ebay sitting in its case but don't know if you would be able to get it to fit...

I am sure that would be a real handful, it made me chuckle when I saw it!!!
Pimp my ride - this is about the biggest I can get...

This is a Raynox 2.2x and is part of my macro kit, it also has a Raynox DCR 250 close up lens, fitted behind the converter. My thoughts were to try to get the magnification from the converter (140 x2.2 = 308mm at f2.8), but then to get closer with the achromatic lens. Unfortunately while it focused and actually worked quite well, it was not particularly usable in the field. Part of the problem is that the DCR250 has a spring clip system to attach to various lenses from 52 through to 62, remove it from it attachment and there is a back screw on the filter which is 43mm in size, so I need a step down 58 to 43 to get a more secure fit, on the front the screw size is 49mm and I have step up rings to fit that to the 62mm of the 2020 (does that make sense??).

Anyway, putting all this gubbins on the camera means that I can close focus at around 1.5m. However, I have found that I get far better results with my 180 macro, plus a normal 1.4x or 2x converter on my DSLR – so I now tend to go out with both cameras. As I approach my subject I use the DSLR, if I can then get in close I will switch to the G11.

A couple of other "Franken-monsters"...

G11 Plus +2 +2 +1 (total +5) diopter close up lenses and a Olympus 1.45 x Converter basically takes the 140mm up to 203mm equiv...

G11 with a 50mm f1.8 reversed - I did some more testing on this combo, I found that I could get away with just a single adapter tube on the G11 because the front of the lens is deeply recessed. I am yet to get anything useful with this set up, but it is there just in case!!!

John,

don't you get terrible chromatic abberations with all those close-up filters attached? If i use 2 of them there is allready a lot of it visible.

HI Eric, I would only normally recommend using 2, this was in my early days, they are all achromatic filters so they do not have many of the problems associated with the cheaper filters. I have since added a couple of stronger dioptre filters to my kit and in general try not to stack – however, from memory, I don’t think they were that bad, in fact the images were quite usable.

Since I have been able to test my kit more extensively in the field, I try to stick to either: Sigma +1.6 dioptre (achromatic macro lens in 58mm), Konica-Minolta CL49-200 which is 4 dioptre (but I think it is closer to +5, this is in 49mm thread) and finally a Raynox DCR-250 which comes in at +8 (this is quite a small unit at 43mm, but when fitted in its normal adapter will cover 52mm through to 67mm). If I need closer I can pair the +4 and +8 but DoF is small and there is a restricted working distance, but it works very well, no CA or other major problems. That is when I should really try to fit the Raynox 2020 to increase the working distance… While I am getting nearly all I need from the 3 filter set at the moment, hopefully when I get some more time and some suitable subjects I will try experimenting. I possibly need another day down at the local butterfly farm, a grand day out, apart from after 60 minutes I think my brain has been par boiled!!!

I stacked the Canon 250D (+4) and 500D (+2) (achromatic) close up lenses for this shot yesterday.

It was a little windy, so it was difficult to get great focus lock, but it turned out okay. I am showing the full image, and a crop. I don't see any problems in the results.

Those are two nice quality filters, I would expect them to work together very well. Wind has always been the big killer of close up work.

Depends what you want to do, tele, close-up, wide angle: all of that?

John Baker suggested the Hoya close-up filter set, wich work pretty good for me. I did get the lensmate parts wich are a bit more expensive than the clone ones but i really like te build quality of the lensmate adapters. If you have a large enough budget the canon close-up lenses might be worth a look too.

Here is an example taken with the +4 and +2 combined. There will be fringing on the high contrast areas though.
The flower is about 6 to 8 mm.

cool pic, I think I want to zoom in more right now then do wide shots, guess there is not a lense that does both?

It's the built-in lens. You can do macro with the G11 lens, and then zoom out to do wide angle. The G11 macro focus range is 0.4 in.-1.6 ft./1-50cm. The use of close-up lenses as add-ons are to try to control DoF, and allow you to add distance to let more light in. At least those are my purposes.

I'm working to build a G11 system that provides a light-weight alternative to a DSLR for outdoor sports/racing and nature work.

1. I have a Lensmate adapter set and it is fantastic. I can use any filter available in 72mm (without conversion lenses in place).

2. I have a 2x TC-DC58C and it performs really well, but only at full extension. Anything less produces massive vignetting.

3. I am interested in the 1.4 58D and the .75 58B, but am pretty sure I don't want to bother unless they are functional through the entire zoom range. Can anyone confirm that vignetting will not be an issue on the G11?

4. Does anyone sell a filter holder that is threaded on one side and have a rubber/plastic lip on the other, so as to slip over the end of these teleconverters like a simple lens cap? That would be a problem-solver.
