I've used Speedlite's and Studio light's.

I guess it depends how much of the HiLite will be used.
ie: Headshot, bodyshot, etc...

but i have been told, that to do it properly studio type lights is the way to go

i was just wondering how much they would cost if i went down this route

Well, people have lit them fine with Speedlite's.

Granted studio light's are more powerful and cheaper than a 580EX, but it doesn't mean it won't work.

I personally like putting 2-3 Speedlite's physically inside the HiLite.
I control them remotely from the master.

It also saves floor space by not having two more stands on each side.

I use 2-3 Speedlite's for the faster recycle times over using 1 or 2.

I've used my Elinchrom's with them too and they work great.

However, when I mess around with them, the stands they sit on make it very difficult to go over and adjust with the little room I have.

But hey, that's me... :)

thank you

i would need to buy more speedlights so i was thinking that if i am going to spend the money i might as well get proper lights

i was just wondering how much that would cost and what type of lights to get?

There are several different size HiLite backgrounds available now. You didn't say which one you have. I actually have the 5x7 and the 6x7 versions. If I want pretty uniform light across the larger HiLite, I use two studio strobes, one in each side (and one high and one low). I'm using Elinchrom Dlite-4's for this, but other strobes would work just as well. I can get by with one strobe in the HiLite and fix any issues in post with Photoshop, and I often used just one strobe in the smaller HiLite.

So, to answer your question, if you want studio strobes that you can use for this and potentially for other things, at times, such as for your main and fill lights, there are many options that depend on your budget. You'll find a lot of Alien Bees fans here and quite a few Elinchrom fans too.

How effective is it to use 2 430ex flashes either side of the background? Should a 1/4 power be enough in this case?
