Batteries in Battery Pack

i recently started to use the (pixelHK) battery pack for my 580EX I & II. when the flash are being use, where are they getting the juice from? the battery pack? or the batteries inside the flash or both location? i remember reading somewhere (cant find it) that there is a setting on the flash that it will only use the juice from the battery pack?

i have both Powerex 2700 batteries & the Eneloop. what's better to use in the pack?

I think by default it is using all 12 of them, but you can set it in custom setting to just use the 8 AAs from the battery pack and use the 4 AAs in the flash unit just to power the control.

I have my 580EX configured to charge from the external pack (mine is the original Canon pack) and use the internal batteries for control. The setting is in the C.Fn on the 580EX. This way if the battery pack dies, I still have some juice left in the flash (just in case I cannot grab my backup batteries quickly enough before the next shot).

Recently I've only used Eneloop (and their equivalent rebadged ones) batteries in the packs and the flash. Just seems more reliable than my old NiMH batteries.
