well...not really. macro is usually defined as a 1:1 representation of the subject on the sensor of the camera. Some pocket cameras have a decent close up mode or "macro" mode for close up pictures e.g. canon s3IS though with some additions - they can get close to the 1:1 magnification.

Whilst not necessarily strictly macro, it's still close up. And if that's all your current camera can do, then using it to get as close in is a good starting point.
