Using my 5Dmk2/MPE-65 combo the other day and got an awful dull thunk when I went to take a picture with an error code I think 001. Slight panic but turned off the camera took off the lens and reseated it, turned it on and happily carried on shooting.
Next day same thing happend except I got a message on the back LCD saying something like.
"There is a communication problem between the lens and the camera, please clean the lens contacts". I duly did this and it now seems fine.
Never realised there were some useful error messages on canon DSLRs !

Clean the contacts between lens and body, I do believe there was an issue with earlier firmware that caused loss of communication between lens and body after sensor cleaning so you may want to update that if it's not up to date

edit: sorry noticed you have cleaned so disregard my comment. Agreed on the error advice though, it's normally mumbo jumbo so nice to get advice in English lol

Actually turns out the message was not as useful as I thought. Seems I have a problem with the lens (MPE-65) which is losing connection when I change the magnification so guessing I actually have problems with a ribbon cable connection inside the lens.

useful info. Today I was losing a lot of shots because of the same problem and cleaning the contacts made no difference.
Having read this thread I tried different magnifications and now realise the problem only occurs at x1.5 and happens on 5D2 or 40D
I think I can live with this for a while as I am still awaiting my MT-24EX to be returned and don't feel like spending another small fortune. How much was it to have you MP-E65 repaired if you can remember that far back?
