I am about to order a few accessories such as the BG-E3, sync cable for my 430EXII so I can actually use it the way I want to, and a remote. Is the RC-6 a good choice for $25? I am only looking to use it for self portraits.

the rc-6 I believe is optical and not that good in range and in direct sunlight. the one above is good check it out, you just need to indicate for your camera on check out.

No I'm not a photographer, I just shoot with Canon DSLR with those lenses with red thingy...;)

I use it on my 5d. Range is pretty good. Maybe 25 ft. It's IR not RF acutuated. Not bad for simple stuf. I use it in locked off videoode to avoid shake

I don't want to spend $120 for a remote that I'm going to use for self portraits.

This is the most flexible option in terms of performance and price, it's a bit cheaper than the Phottix Plato and matches it's functions.

Just make sure you order the right plug for the camera body your'e using.

Here is the relevant ebay listing for the XTI

Maybe it will go back down. Maybe another site has one? I will check it out.

How long have you had the phottix ? If your doing remote wildlife photography the auto off could be an issue.
I have not had any problems with the cheaper unit in 5 months.

I'd probably get a more expensive remote, if I use it all the time, but I use this sparingly

For less than the price of the Plato, you might as well get a RF-602 which doubles as wireless remote and wireless flash trigger, that way you can use the 430exII off camera.

Thank you very much. I am going to order that one right now. That will save me the $50 I was going to spend on a sync cord. Have you used this unit for the flash? Does it work well?

I don't do wild life so the auto off don't bother me. I like it because it saves battery life. I do landscape and long exposure and the quality of the plato is alot better than the last one I had and theres a led indicator that turns green when connection and transmission is received at both ends. I just got it but from testing and watching the reviews from youtube, it delivered what it promised.

Do a search on the forums the RF-602 has a lot of users,

http://community.the-digital-picture.com/forums/t/3441.aspx (external link)

the only issue I have with it, is that it IS doesn't have full E-TTL or TTL compatibility which means you need to set the flash output manually, a flash sync cord should have full E-TTL, but then you would need the flash pretty close to the camera. The RF-602 reciever allows to put the flash almost anywhere. Aslo is supports more than one reciever, I've seen them selling package with 4 receivers for studio use.

To get E-TTL wireless flash triggering, is an expensive exercise. Here is an overview of the state of play.
