Anything tired using this combo?

Which would take the 70-200?

I was thinking about picking up a used 40D (maybe even a 50D if prices keep looking so good)

I figured the 5Dmkii would look great with the 35L for close ups

but I also thought the 5Dmkii would be great on the 70-200 2.8 IS for high ISO.

The xxD would be great for the extra reach on the Zoom though.

Any other suggestions I should try?

I'm doing this mainly because I find myself either at ~135-200mm or at 24mm-35mm.

I'm finding it hard to understand your question. Are you asking what camera/lens set up you should buy?

Sounds like OP's trying to figure out which lens sits on which body.

35L -> 5d2 & 70-200 -> crop
or
70-200 -> 5d2 & 35L -> crop.

i would slap the 70-200 on the xxD and 35L on the 5D .. reason ?

70-200 + 1.6 for more reach,
35L + FF = what else? creamyness

Huh? So the question is about proven combos? Well of course, I agree with tsw.

So basically

1.6x with 70-200
5dmkii with 35

unless I'm in low light, then I'll have to do a swap to get the extra ISO and give up the reach.

or

^^ This was the Q

Sorry I guess I was speaking without organizing my thoughts haha.

The 35/1.4L on a full-frame for slightly wide/normal shots plus a 70-200 on a crop body could work quite well. I'm not sure I'd do it the other way around though because 35mm on a crop body is not a whole lot wider than 70mm on a full-frame.

I'll be doing the same thing within the next month or two hopefully, only with a 17-40 and a 70-200.

17-40 on the crop for moderately wide and 70-200 on the FF for moderately long.

or flip them and...

17-40 on the FF for very wide and 70-200 on the crop for very long.
