isn't your portfolio your 'certification'?

if your really trying to stand out, include a 1 page 'overview' of 'good picture' vs 'bad picture' of similar subjects, to provide just enough education to allow them to make the 'right' choice?

I'm a bit confused what you want to do here. It seems like you want to hand the power over to manufacturers to decide who is good and not. I wouldn't want to go that way since manufacturers are not impartial and I'm sure that would just lead to a money grabbing scheme.

it would be worth just as much as any other piece of paper from a 3rd party saying your qualified to do something.

You must not be that good then. If people think you're at the same level as the know-nothing noob, it's time for you to step up your game. Or perhaps the know-nothing noob knows more than you care to admit. :)

Crack me up Don ... much more direct and to the point than my earlier post.

ummm...I simply said that in relation to people's reaction to the word "photographer." Since I don't advertise, I don't do photography as a full-time job and I ONLY work when I'm approached, I don't have to worry about people's perception of my work.

So then you shouldn't really care about how people are battling it out in the marketplace. If you don't care enough about the world's perception of your hard work, insight and creative effort, then why should it bother you that there's fiercer competition in the "photo business" with the mass influx of all the so-called noobs and their shiny new cameras?

It's always been this way since the first spear maker, bow and arrow artisan, master wood worker, skilled potter and fine artist. The best work may be the best, but if it's not promoted well to the public or marketted effectively, it will have few buyers.

thank goodness i have a real job...they should build the guild so that the rest of the noobs can keep annoying those who think they are above everyone else. is this the L effect? makes you become a snob. I wonder if all Nikon shooter have this so called photographer's guild members.....or maybe the nikon shooters are right, most canon shooters spend their time on computers than actually taking photos.......hmmmmm.........wait for it.......wait for it...............

No I'm not a photographer, I just shoot with Canon DSLR with those lenses with red thingy...;)

Perhaps this hypothetical guild could lobby the photographic industry so that the purchase of an SLR required a permit. The guild could set proficiency standards which must be met before the purchase permit would be issued...that should weed out all those "low end" photographers and leave SLRs only in the hands of the deserving "high-end" illuminati.

As to the original post, I don't ever concern myself with what anybody does in/on Facebook. Maybe it's because I'm 48 years old and starting to get cranky, but whenever I think of FB, I think of angsty, whiny, teenage drama and irrelevant trivia. No, I don't care that you're going out to get an ice cream. No, I don't care that you're doing your laundry right now. Similarly, I couldn't care less if one of my (more FB-inclined) friends bought a Rebel and made a FB page for "<whoever> Photography". *shrug* Knock yourself out....it doesn't affect me in any way.

How 'bout you leave it up to me what I care and don't care about? That'd be just peachy.

Anyways...I'm off to the Rockies for a week of camping then camping with some great friends on the west coast of the Island...toodles!
