What CF card do you use with the 5D2? I need space for two weeks in Hawaii.

Do you shoot raw, are you going to be able to upload your photos to a notebook, how many photos do expect to take each day ?
I get 273 raw images from an 8gb Sandisk Extreme card on the 5DM2, so you may need more than one card, unless you can transfer them.

2 weeks in Hawaii?
How many pics do ya think you're gonna take?
Do you plan on doing any video clips?
If ya do, I'd suggest at least a pair of 16GB 45MB/s UDMA capable cards.
I get approximately 500+ shots RAW & sJPG or 4 - 12 min/3.7GB vid clips with mine.

If you think you're going to exceed either(or both) of these, you might want to take a laptop or some kind of additional storage device like a Hyperdrive Colorspace unit to upload/backup your content.

SanDisk Extreme III, IV or Extreme in 4-32 GB sizes. Figure on about 40 RAW shots per GB.

I have the 7D but the same problem. 3 weeks in Paris coming up and don't want to take the laptop.
So I picked up 5 - Transcend 64gb 400x from NewEgg.com

For the US http://www.newegg.com …aspx?Item=N82E16820208530 (external link)

For the Canadians http://www.newegg.ca …aspx?Item=N82E16820208530 (external link)

I keep 1 in the camera, and 4 in an Aluminum Case, for holding CF Cards.

I should be able to go crazy, and still have lots of empty space. Even with 42 RAW files to a Gig.

Isn't it cheaper to get a netbook with a 250gb hard drive, or a digital foci type unit and upload the photos

Yup. I have both them available too. As well as a small laptop. But I'm going to be bouncing around, from city to city by bus, train and air for 2.5 weeks, so I decided I needed to reduce what I was lugging around. And he probably doesn't need 4 of them. I'm just crazy ;-)a I just wanted extra space, in case I decide to take a couple videos as well as lots of photos.

I would just use the CF cards you already have and buy a Western Digital My Passport Studio 640 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/800 USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive for $141.76 from amazon. Includes free shipping too. I also use it with my 800 Sandisk Extreme firewire card reader and it uploads my pictures really fast.

Having just a laptop may not be the entire answer. My wife and I shot two 16GB cards each day on a recent trip. We had well over 400GB from the trip. So I have a pair of 1TG Seagate drives to connect to the laptop. The laptop's internal drive was not large enough...and would not provide redundancy. So each night, download from the cards to the pair of external drives.

To minimize dowload time:
- UDMA compliant reader. Fastest reader will likely be an Expresscard on PCIbus, next faster would be firewire800, with firewire 400 and USB 2 being around the same. -
- External drives fastest is likely eSATA, then firewire 800, then firewire 400 and USB 2 being around the same. The 7200 speed drives will likely be faster than 5200 drives.

Can't wait until we can have UDMA readers with USB 3 and exteral SATA 3 drives with USB 3. That should really reduce long download times.

I would suggest trying to shot mostly JPEG because of the memory card/hard drive space limitations mentioned.
