I sync my cameras as close as I can, and do it manually. I can't use the canon software because I shoot both canon and nikon. The canon software sucks... it totally DOES NOT sync to the millisecond; I tried it many many times. Sometimes my cameras were off by over a second right after time syncing from the software. Well timed finger pushes in the camera menu is what I use.

Interesting. Mine's always been close with the Canon software, and I manually sync the 5D my assistant uses because it's old and the Canon software I have installed doesn't recognise it.

I generally agree, the NR is LR3 is vastly improved. That said, I don't find it equal to programs like Noiseware.

Interesting turnaround. Back in February you said:

after playing around with LR3 beta and its enhanced noise handling, I can imagine NW sitting idle.

I upgraded mainly because of your testimonial. :D

Yes, I find NW works better than LR3 with pics I shot at 1600 ISO on my 50d's (but I avoid this as much as possible). However, 800 ISO or less I can't tell the difference. And anytime I can avoid sucking another gargantuan PSD file into my hard drive is fine by me.

Imagenomic makes fine PS plug-ins. I still use "Portraiture" a lot.

I was real impressed with LR3, maybe because I was prepared to be unimpressed based on everything I had heard about LR2 and noise. Since originally posting that, I found LR3 a little challenged at handling especially noisey images; images at high ISO that I may have needed to increase exposure in post. They don't come out bad, and if I didn't already have NW, I suppose I could make do, but for the most challenging pictures, there really is a difference in what NW can do.

Actually, I'll let LR3 do ISO1600 pics from my 50D as long as I didn't boost exposure in post, but I think that's where I'll draw the line.

Makes sense but when I shoot at ISO 1600 I probably need to be at 3200 so I almost always need to brighten things up a bit in post.

Well, unless it can read your mind I'm guessing it requires at least one keystroke or mouseclick to do this... the same as LR.

Photomechanic previews/sorts/culls a hell of a lot faster than Lightroom.

how about pies? i love ice cream and pies :D

im in the same boat now, im redoing my whole workflow and dont know how to do it hahaha....whats the advantage of Photomechanic over Breeze Browser Pro? i heard BBPro has way better file naming functions but PM has way better IPTC tagging functions....is that true?

im not sure which one to use to start the workflow, i can keep Bridge but saying its slow is a frikking understatement...i only shoot raw with a 7D and running just an e8400 with 4G mem Bridge isnt the fastest kid on the block....

I'm about to try Fast Picture Viewer (external link), it's compatible with Adobe XMP (ie Bridge/Lightroom) and is meant to be screaming fast.

I know little about IPTC as i've never needed to know.

I mainly use Lightroom 2 but I'm saving for LR3. Since I shoot with multiple camera's I rename my files beginning with the date followed by time and then original file name.
For example: 20100730_1408_IMG8425. In the end it makes sorting the pics for the clients easier. Don't know if there is an easier way.
Recently I've been following some webinars from NIK software. Seriously considering buying it as the black and white conversions are easy and beautiful.

You don't need to make serializing your images so difficult. I didn't have LR2, but in LR3, as part of the coversion to JPGs, there are many options available for renaming. You just need to sort by capture time first and let the export process produce much more friendlier names than that for you.

Also, take a look at Tiffen's DFX. NIK is one of the giants in the space, but DFX offers many other looks and effects at a lower cost. I've been very happy with it.

I use Lightroom 3 for most things. I do use Photoshop when I need to do something more. Outside of Lightroom 3, my favorite tool is Nik Silver Efex. I really enjoy Black and White and I feel that Silver Efex does it the best.

I too shoot with multiple cameras. The day before the wedding, I sync the camera clocks. By doing this, Lightroom puts them in the right order and you don't have to mess with the file name.

+1 on photo mechanic (or other programs recommended). If your culling in lightroom, your doubling the time it takes you to do it. In the end, lr will get these features incorporated into their software. I cull in PM, copy culled raws to an export folder, do my edits and export jpegs to the edit folder, then delete raw files in export folder.

regarding renaming, I once read a post about a bride that questioned why the filenumbers were out of sequence and wanted the missing numbers. I would rename sequentially just because of that.

Has anyone tried or used Phase One (Capture 5 is the latest) software in their workflow? I would be interested in feedback as I am looking into it now.

Thanks
