Anyone used one of these? Looks pretty cheap, wanted to make sure it would work right. What would a black or white card be used for?

What is your intended purpose for a gray card?

The gray card in that set looks like it is intended for white balance only - not for exposure measurement. Other information on the set can be seen at the Opteka web site (external link).

I didn't know they had cards for exposure but after reading your post and searching, I see they do. Probably a good thing to have, can you recommend something?

I use the Kodak gray cards (18% gray on one side and 90% - white - on the other) when all I have is a reflected-light meter and want to measure the light falling on my subject(s).

Normally, though, I use a handheld meter with incident measuring capability. A handheld meter set up for incident readings is more convenient than using a gray card in front of a reflected light meter. The meter I use is a Sekonic L-358, and it is always with my camera.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to read a bit more about this to see what I can accomplish with just a card. I don't have the budget for a light meter right now.

You can get a collapsible Lastolite grey card. Years ago I colour matched and painted one face of my hard lens box 18% grey.

I’ve always been surprised that you couldn’t get an 18% grey Peli case. Maybe you can now?

The WhiBal card, though great for white balance is much too light a gray level to use for metering without some manual compensation being applied.

I've heard that Kodak has recommended that to get a true 18% gray, you can grab a shot of the sky at noon in Rochester, NY pretty much any day of the year.

(OK, it's an old joke from back with Kodak and Rochester mattered in photography.)
