Ravens moved into my area about 4-5 years. This, the biggest of all corvids, was certainly less common in Ottawa since we moved her in 1990. I really like these birds but have, until the last couple of weeks, be unable to get any decent photos of them. This year a family of 4 can regularly seen terrorising the local nests of grackles, red-wing blackbirds and other songbirds.

Usually I'm cooking something on the B-B-Q or mowing the lawn when the action takes place. Last night was different. :D

All photos taken with Canon 40D and Sigma 50-500mm Handheld.

1. Male Red-wing Attacks

2. Pressing his advantage as the raven banks to avoid him

3. A Grackle take its turn. Attacks from above seem to get the best result.

4. Grackle pulls us for another strike.

5. Another Dive bomber attack.

6. Follow through

Great series of shots Stephen......we don't have ravens down here, but I sure wish we did.

I see this action here at the Canyon, but it's brewer's blackbirds doing the attacking. It's very entertaining. Nice shots Stephen!

Great series Stephen. I love watching displays like this. I use to think the little birds can't do any damage, but they can, if they get a hit in just right. If they kept it to feather pulling, it would be a great game. LOL

Thanks Sharon. They really are impressive birds. Their vocalisations are amazing.

Thank you Mitch. Unfortunately these are fairly big crops so the details area not as crisp as I would have liked but I was still happy to capture the action.
