The one thing to mention is a personal preference of a lot of eventers (my wife included) is to try and avoid straight on pictures of the jump. This is the one thing from speaking with the eventers I know, as they prefer to see the jump from the side or more of an angle like your first photo.

Keep at it, horse shows/eventing is a lot of fun and has been a great way for myself as a beginner to photography to practice timing and composition on photos

Rebs advise is correct. Also your images are slightly, very slightly, underexposed. I often have arguments about this on these forums. If you shoot slightly overexposed you will have better detail on the riders' faces. You will run the risk of blowing highlights. But to me, the rider is more important than highlights.

If you shot in raw you can massage these. Very, very picky on my part.
