Did I receive a soft 24-105? Or a dud 5DII?

This just doesn't seem as sharp as I was expecting.

(Will post more 24mm and 50mm F4.0 samples tomorrow.)

Try using microadjust, it looks be front focusing a tad. Also since its 21MP you are probably past the resolution of the lens and this makes it appear less sharp

jpegs out of the camera from the 5D mark 2 usually arent the sharpest. i always shoot in raw sharpen my photos a bit in PP.

The sweet spot for the 24-105mm is around f/8, check out the ISO12233 crops between f/8 and f/4

if that's not sharp, then you should discard your 5DII and buy Hasselblad H3D :p

The weak spot of the 24-105 is at 105mm wide open - that's what you just discovered. Your lens and your camera are fine. Just learn the limitations of both and deal with it accordingly (like stopping down the lens a bit at the long end).

I am also concerned by some light-fallout at F4.0 on the 24-105L. Is this normal? It clears up by F5.6.
