Ok, what do I need to know about buying generic/used backup batteries?

I actually don't have a backup battery, but I am thinking to getting one "just in case." I'm pretty pleased with how my battery holds a charge. So, I'm thinking I would want to get a generic one. Any warnings/advice? Brands to avoid, etc.

Thanks,
L.

If you use them you will void your factory warranty.

There are so many knock off name batteries that God only knows where they are being manufactured at or worse yet the quality being put into these products to sell them so cheap.

Many a user here (including myself in the past) uses these batteries. Some with never an issue yet some with. The way I started looking at it is; why risk the chance of a failure that would void the cameras warranty on some really cheap battery? Even if its out of warranty you'd stand a better chance with a repair if an OEM battery is used.

I just can't see cost savings being worth the risk factor.

For our 7Ds I would not consider anything but Canon brand. Compare the cost of the body to the cost of the battery....not a good business case for using an unknown....especially if it kills warranties.

Depends on the camera. I use Canons for my 1D3, 5D2 and 7D because there just weren't chipped third-party alternatives. I used Sterlingtek quite happily in my D60, 20D and 5D.

For whomever asked, I have a Rebel Xsi. It's just over a year old.

I think you all have me properly spooked, though.

Thanks!

Li-ion batteries have a calendar life to them, and will lose capacity just sitting on a shelf unused...so a USED battery is a total unknown, because you do not know when the battery was manufactured.
