I am looking for a small shoulder bag or backpack to hold a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II with 24-70 f.2.8L attached and a 430EX flash. The only bag I have right now is a Tamrac Pro 12 that fits all my gear but it is too heavy to carry on a casual day out. I like the National Geographic Earth Explorer Small Shoulder Bag but don't know if it is big enough to fit the above equipment. My price range is <$50.

Thanks!

Take a look at Domke's F3x. It'll take your 1Ds with any of your lenses.

The hot bag for exactly this application is the Think Tank Photo Retrospective 10. See:

Not with a 1D series unless you want to store the body and lens separately. The F5 series are the right width for ungripped bodies; a grip will bulge them out and make zipping awkward.

The Think Tank Retrospective 10 looks good and pretty much same thing as the National Geographic Medium Shoulder Bag but a lot more expensive. Does anyone have any experience with the Nat Geo bags? I found a great deal on the medium size which looks like it should fit everything I want. I want to keep this bag less than $50. So far the recommendations for Think Tank and Domke are about $150.

The Lowepro Micro Trekker 200 will work with a 24-70 2.8L attached to a 1D4 body with the hood in the shooting position plus a 580EX II on one side & a CP-E4 on the other. A 70-200 2.8L IS will fit in the same manner with the hood reversed. With careful re-positioning of the dividers, I can squeeze my 200 1.8L & 1D4 into it, but there's no room for accessories.

Haha! Not as much as you may think...both camera bodies were recently purchased 2nd hand. I have a great bag that fits everything that I carry to weddings and other important shoots where I need all my gear (Tamrac Pro 12). I love that bag! I just want a simple small bag that I can carry with me on a day to day basis when I want to go out and take some pics for a couple hours so I don't have to carry all my gear with me when I only use one camera and 1 lens and sometimes maybe a flash.

Domke F-3x or Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home would work well. Both are very good bags.

+1. Just the right size for a pro body and some extra stuff.
