ETTL II is a camera body function, not a flash function.

The II in 580EX II has nothing to do with ETTL II.

The II in 580EX II just indicates it is the second version of the 580EX flash.

Enjoy! Lon

I shoot real estate photogrpahy for a living and I was told that the 430ex was all I would need. I was waiting for the 430exII to come out because I wanted the metal foot. I got tired of waiting and went with the 580exII. Best decision I made. The 580exII recycles very quickly and I have yet to ever be in a situation where it didn't do the job. In my opinion, it is worth the extra money.

The 580ex(ii) pivots so you can bounce any wall/ceiling you like. The 430exii will irritate you if your wanting quick direction of light to the right rear (behind right shoulder). In order to shoot light in that direction you must pivot the head counter clockwise all the way around to the 4 o'clock position. The 430exii has been extremely solid. I've killed two 580exii (purchased new) with regular use. Both flashes had 1 to 1.5yrs use. I believe its due to POS circuitry/quality. Just cant wait till they revise to a 580exIII :)

Wow, that is surprising to hear about the 580s. I shoot about 500 properties a year and I've been running the same 580ex II for over two years now. Not a single problem. Are you using full strength a lot? I'm just shocked that you could kill two of them in such a short time. There must have been something defective with them to die that quickly on you. I know I very rarely use mine at full strength. I rely on shutter speed a lot to use as much ambient light as possible and then use the flash to simply fill in.

kamusta! :) though i'm comparing the 430 I to the 580 II

is this something my 430 doesn't have? currently, i have to do custom white balance to match ambient and bounced flash. (flash WB or AWB doesn't work with the mixed light)

now THIS is something i forgot, i can only bounce the 430 straight up (or to the left in portrait mode), a nightmare when i was in a room with mirror ceilings.

thanks. i'll look into this.

was trying to decide which to buy first, a pocketwizard for off cam flash on the 430ex (and alleviates the weight of the camera) OR a 580ex II

I'm surprised that no one mentioned that the 580 series can be used as a "master" or "slave" in a wireless set-up, while the 430 series can only be used either on camera, or as a "slave"...but not as a "master"

Peace,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!

The 580EX II has:
Wireless master control
Is more power (141' (43 m) while the 580EX II has a Guide Number of 190' (58 m)) - Very useful
Faster recycling time
Is weather sealed
Has a better hot shoe mount
Comes with bounce card integrated into the flash head
Is larger by about 10%
Displays the guide numbers for you
Better controls (dials and buttons vs just dials)

Other features are basically the same.

For me it's well worth the extra $$ over the 430EX (version II) I own 2 580EX II and a 430EX II
