I had one fun and frustrating evening all in one.

the fun part :

a shoot with my friend Ryan Hicks AKA "Skill" - Recently Ryan Graduated and is in the real world and he has been working full time and hasn't had a chance to shoot for about 2 weeks.. so this night presented it self as a reunion for us to hang, shoot, talk and had a late dinner together

the other fun part was to work with Kathryn, a 6 feet tall model - high school senior - that has a lot going for her in the modeling world.
( she was the bride in the holiday fashion show.. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=791617 )

the frustrating part:

we all got kicked out of an amazing location - an abandoned ware house , but still on property near a rail road, the security people were nice about it.. they say they kick out people ever other day.. darn it ! it was a sweet location ..

these photos or images are a new representation of my ever changing style in photography..

i classify these as personal art.. in this art there should be a sense of Movie Like Poster or a Still from a scene..

also must have:

- motion
- tell a story
- be interesting to look at

so those are the fundamental building blocks for making a great image in the way i am currently thinking

thanks to this forum and the 2 years i have been here, and what the members here have done for me.. interact, critique, and friended me, with out this i would never be where i am in photography career..

recently i had interview by Mike Panic , it tells a story about me.. who i am , where i want to be in the future and everything in between..

link is here http://www.randomn3ss.com …her-ct-pham-aka-phamster/ (external link)

thanks Mike for this opportunity for me to speak out and spot light publicity..

and the photos

---------------

Kathryn the Drama Queen.. very fitting title for this shot..

you just had to have been there..

this concrete ledge is a drop off to about 30 feet.. she wanted to lay on it !!! and did lay on it.. mother was there, i was like no !!!

but as soon and i looked over she way laying on the ledge !!! i couldn't not believe it! one mistake and she could have been seriously hurt.. thus the drama Queen Title.

lighting used is 1 AB1600 with 64 PLM

camera right at about 1/2 power and about 10 feet away.. still produces soft light..

also i am doing some serious post processing learning.. (meaning it is a composite)

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture:f/3.5
Focal Length:35 mm
ISO Speed:160
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

Well, had a wonderful day..

had my full photography interview with Mike Panic ! Thanks for this mike..

also had a wonderful eventful shoot with Kathryn, we got kicked out of an abandon warehouse ! fun..

the security was very nice to us.. and we left and found a better shot anyways..

this one, in Kathryn's pool ! haha.. inspired by Wild Things movie, and Kirk Voclain

lighting was 1 AB1600 gridded by Ryan O Hicks...

and 2 side kickers 580's at 1/8 power about 10 feet away with white shoot thru umbrella's

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture:f/2.2
Focal Length:85 mm
ISO Speed:100
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:On, Fired

had another fun shot for myself ..

i remember playing on the Commodore 64 in my youth the game called SKATE or DIE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skate_Or_Die (external link)

this shot is dedicated to the game of the old.. although it has nothing to do with the game.. just my out of the box concept..

Personal work is going to be more like movie Stills for me..

- tell a story
- have motion
- make it interesting

hopefully i included all of those in this shot.. haha.. Pass or Fail?

lighting was one AB1600 camera Left about 8 feet away with PLM 64

triggered by Cactus V4's

thanks Kathryn for doing some hard work and hair banging, also to connie (mom) with working the white board flicks for the hair motion and the rock and dust data too !

and my friend <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rohicks/">Ryan O Hicks</a> was on the set to help out with anything too..

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture:f/7.1
Focal Length:35 mm
ISO Speed:250
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

this winter was cold and long..

on Xmas day i asked Kathryn if she was bored? and if she was, lets do a shoot in the middle of the night... haha..

so what happened was her whole family came out and did this shoot with me..

dad held the lights, mom helped with the other light, and patrick her bro also assisted with more lighting

it was extremely cold, about 18 degrees, and young Kathryn held it in like a pro..

most of the snow falling was real, i added about 30 percent more, the bokeh on the trees is real.. bottom line i was freezing my you know what off.. but i rather be taking photos than being bored at home.. haha..

this edit involves many layers of textures.. but that is all i did.. simple textures post work

lighting was 2 lights.. AB1600 in the side for the rear kicker
and key light was the AB1600 with A beauty dish.. both were about 1/4 power

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture:f/2.2
Focal Length:85 mm
ISO Speed:500
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

thanks Laine for being my go to model for this..

lighting was single alien bee AB1600 @ 3/4 power with PLM about 8-10 feet way....

For the Record...

Thanks guys for the warm welcome on this photo.

for the record i bought me a 2011 Outback.. so that means this WRC Subaru is a photoshop composite..

didn't mean to mislead anybody..

i don't think i can do this shot if it wasn't for Photoshop.. long exposure with 2nd curtain sync is possible, but the light trails probably not..

art is art right? and personal art is even more aggressive..

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture:f/8.0
Focal Length:35 mm
ISO Speed:100
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

what can be better than 2 Girlfriends having fun during the summer?

one light source

AB1600 Camera left with 64 PLM for the short lighting at about 3/4 power

Triggered by Cactus V4's

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture:f/8.0
Focal Length:35 mm
ISO Speed:100
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

---------------

had a chance to do a fun shoot for Laine...

lighting was a single AB1600 with PLM 64 at about 3/4 power and placed camera left..
the set up photo was opposite of where i finally liked the light and placement .. so camera left !

Camera:Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure:0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture:f/8.0
Focal Length:35 mm
ISO Speed:100
Exposure Bias:0 EV
Flash:Off, Did not fire

Pham,
I have been constantly amazed by your shots. Very inspirational! Can't wait to get my first AB and start experimenting in the hope of one day producing something 1/100th as good as this.

Pham, my goodness man you are just sick! some of the shots in here are truly inspirational.. not really sure why you are working a day job.. I think you should start doing workshops, i'm sure people would come to learn from you.

Wow...outstanding!
The one with the two girls in the car...you shot that through the windshield? I would have thought I would see some reflection on the windshield?

Good pics. Keep it up!

Also, how do you go about finding your models and how do you even convince them to model for you?

I love these..Your work really amazes me at times mate.

...but I thought that I might add some hopefully constructive observation.

The first pic which is stunning but obviously is a comp, has some bad masking around her heel and sole of her shoe on the right leg.

Since its an easy fix for you I thought I would mention it. Then it would be perfect! ;)

great work as always bud. I hear you on the day-job comments. at times I think it'd be great to switch over and do the photo gig full time, but i like being able to just not shoot in february if I don't want to...and still know I get a paycheck regardless :)

your work continues to improve by leaps and bounds and i really (as we all do) appreciate the extra mile you go to help us all understand what it takes to make these beautiful photos

Thanks

you make my 40D look like a Brownie...

And I will hop on the "thank you" wagon for always being assessable and giving with your knowlege and expirience!

@Tsxn - I think he is in Indiana... Corn fed girls abound! My question would be more how does he get an 18 YO girl *AND* her whole family to come out and make art! But if he is as nice in RL as he is here, that is a no brainer! He asks politely.
