Anybody tried a Sigma AF 100-300mm f/4 APO EX DG HSM? I've always laughed at Sigma (read: lens snob), but I have a fast 100, and I think I'd like the 300 (used to have the Canon f4IS and liked it, but only carried on purpose, not a whim).

I just had the Canon 70-200 f4 IS and loved it, but sold it and went for the new 70-200 2.8II. I'm having second thoughts. I already have a lovely Zeiss 100 f2, and shorter than that, a Contax/Zeiss 24-85 N converted to EOS. So maybe I don't need the 70-100 range. And I'd like a little longer, also having had (and sold) a Canon 300 f4IS, a very nice lens but went away to help fund the 2.8II.

Is this on equal footing as the 70-200 IS? or a too weak for a Zeiss-guy like me?

I'm kind of an L snob too...but the Sigma is an awesome lens! Two of my favorite lenses are the Sigma 100-300 f4 & 120-300 f2.8. Those are my favorite lenses for that range, I like them both better than the Canon 100-400. I used the Sigma's at the Indy Air Show last year and LOVE them!

The Sigma 100-300mm f/4 is a great lens. But it seems you really don't know what you want. Since you already have the 70-200mm ,I would just try a 1.4 converter on the 70-200mm 2.8 and see how you like it.

The Sigma 100-300 is an awesome lens. I've had 2 different copies and they where both great lens'. I wish it was a focal length I used more often, then I could justify keeping it full time. Instead I just buy one used when I know it will get some good use for a while then sell it for what I bought it for.

I had one and easiy one of the most capable long lenses I've used. It's very large and not really a carry around lens without a monopod. I agree with Countryboy thop', go for a 1.4x with your 70-200. I doubt you'll see much difference in IQ with the 1.4 and you have speed and IS.

No, (but yes), but I guess you didn't understand when I wrote "second thoughts" on the 70-200, I meant lose it. My option is either going back to either the 70-200 f4IS or 200 2.8L -- or the Sigma. Never occurred to me that the 100-300 was even bigger -- but its a more usable/needed FL for me.

I kinda think my Zeiss's would toss out the Sigma from my bag. Like a toaster!

I did the 1.4 with my old 70-200 4IS and it does work well. I eventually bought a 300 4IS and used occasionally, now gone since I planned on the 70-200 2.8 with the 1.4 giving me a 280 f4IS. Maybe I should think like that -- and keep the bloody 2.8 beast, remembering that it's a few lenses in one, especially with the 1.4.
