Biggest problem with fire photos is getting the exposure on the embers and flames balanced. In the first, the flames have blown out highlights where as in the second I'm wanting to see more red, although it is a pretty good shot and the better by far of the two.

Not a real interesting burn in either of the shots? I agree second is better, but really not super attention grabbing.Look for an inferno!:D

well what i found interesting was the pattern and how it was coming around the closer logs. I agree the first one isnt all that great but those were the 2 best out of the 50 or so i cook :-\ lol these are my first real shots with this camera too, still trying to understand how things work. based on this critique from this thread, and my sunset one, im guessing i need to expand my artistic eye :)

Fire has details, sometimes you have to add light to find them....

Yes, depending on the light, intesnsity of the fire.there are shadows, if you want to bring them out, use fill flash.

In my experience with campfire type shots, they tend to be very uncooperative and difficult for me to compose in an eye-catching manner. Shooting at or close to ground level, finding the best side, and filling the screen has given me the best results.
